Damon said to her when he met her for the first time (season 3 episode 22) :

"You want a Love that consumes you, you want passion & adventure, & even a little danger .... "

that was the reason why elena was attracted to Damon , because he had that fire in him , he scared Elena in a way that she liked , & fancied but she could never accept that part of her personality .

Rose said to Jeremy (season 3 episode 19) :

"Damon is either Best for her or worst "

So we have to wait and see what is her character going tobe like & also the all time favorite question :
