The Vampire Diaries has come a full circle since Season 1. In some ways, Smells Like Teen Spirit went back to its roots with the school bonfire, snarky vampires, and Elena with a hot vampire brother. But this time around, the characters are one year older, none the wiser, and Damon is the "good brother" to Stefan's cruelty. But Damon still gets the good one-liners: Buffy Elena? Barbie Klaus? Yes!
On the first day of senior year, all of the characters were tested to their limits. Stefan returned to class in his Ripper best with Rebekah in tow. Rebekah as a student? Rebekah as a cheerleader? Rebekah vs. Caroline? That's one blonde battle I wouldn't miss. Rebekah may be stronger with an eye on Tyler and Caroline's popularity but Caroline's got spunk! I totally called it last week that Rebekah would be the perfect nemesis for Caroline.
Poor Elena had to deal with not only just her ex in class, but her ex-vampire boyfriend and his ex-vampire girlfriend with violent streaks. Seeing Elena so empowered by her newfound challenge was pretty amazing; Buffy Elena is pretty bad-ass! Also, how amazing was her "lesson on vampire hearts" scene with Damon?!
In other important news, Damon, who was at his very best in Smells Like Teen Spirit, figured out that Tyler was "sired" by Klaus, and felt loyalty towards his "master." Uh-oh...this does NOT look good for Forwood! Although Caroline gave him a good scolding, Rebekah tempted the new hybrid with fresh human blood. I certainly hope Tyler doesn't go over to the dark side completely to fight with Klaus and Rebekah.
Smells Like Teen Spirit was also a strong episode for ghosts Vicki, Anna and in a huge twist, Mason Lockwood! Matt stupidly resurrected Vicki, who in turn tried to kill Elena as a deal to the witch who pushed her over to our side. Anna and Jeremy reconnected (Team Anna!) as Bonnie was pushed to her limit with all the imbalance.
It wouldn't be Vampire Diaries without some proper twists. I don't know what was more shocking: Michael feeding from Katherine (?!) or the return of Mason's ghost! Could Katherine really be dead or has Michael simply fed from her? Could this be a way to kill an Original? Simply drain their blood?
As usual, vote for your favorite scene from Smells Like Teen Spirit!
