Tyler Lockwood is a main character who is a hybrid and plays for the football team at Mystic Falls High School. He was a werewolf until being successfully sired into a hybrid by Klaus. In the latest episode he has become, besides Klaus, the only remaining hybrid.

He is the son of Richard Lockwood and Carol Lockwood, and the nephew of Mason Lockwood who was a werewolf. He was initially portrayed to be arrogant, selfish and a bully. But after triggering the family curse that turned him into a werewolf, he has learned to tone his behavior down.

Before this revelation, he was referred to many times as a "dick," by both Matt Donovan and Jeremy Gilbert. He is shown to have an athletic build, and great strength as a human. He also has a short temper and becomes angry very easily. He didn't understand why he behaved the way he did, until Mason came to visit after Richard Lockwood's death.

He is a member of the Lockwood Family.

History

After discovering that the werewolf gene runs through his family, Tyler was scared to become a werewolf himself and his fears became true when he accidentally killed Sarah and triggered the curse. Caroline Forbes, a vampire who wasn't his friend, offered her support to him, helping him through his first transformation and preparation for his new life. Tyler eventually fell for Caroline, but questioned their relationship when Jules, another werewolf and Mason's friend, told him that Caroline and two other vampires, Stefan and Damon Salvatore, killed Mason. Finding out that this was true, Tyler felt betrayed and leaned towards the werewolf brethren. He hesitated to help Caroline when she and the Salvatore's were at the brink of death, which hurt her, causing her cut off their friendship. He was the one who revealed Mason's plan to break the curse to Jules and her boyfriend Brady. He then helps them find the moonstone and the doppelgänger. Stefan reveals to Tyler that Jules and Brady had lied to him and that Elena would die in the ritual to break the curse. He releases Stefan who kills Brady before he can capture Elena during which time the rest of the pack is killed by Elijah. He then decides to leave town with Jules, the only survivor, with a promise that she wouldn't lie to him anymore. After receiving a phone call from his mother telling him that she had an accident and was in the hospital, Tyler and Jules returned to Mystic Falls. They were both captured by Maddox and Greta Martin, witches working for Klaus, and were to be used in the sacrifice that would make Klaus a vampire/werewolf hybrid. Tyler and Caroline, who had also been captured for the sacrifice ritual, were rescued by Damon, who was later bitten by Tyler during his transformation. Tyler and Caroline eventually start a relationship, which becomes rocky when he becomes Klaus's first successful hybrid. His life made much easier with the transformation and Tyler becomes very respectful of Klaus, trying to sabotage his friends' plots against him.

Season One through Three

Season Four

In Growing Pains, Klaus is in possess of Tyler's body. Klaus had made a deal with Bonnie that he would jump into another body as soon as he could. Later, Klaus (in Tyler's body) starts threatening Bonnie to put him back to his own body, when Bonnie refuses, Klaus starts ripping Tyler's flesh through his claws, forcing Bonnie to do the spell. Tyler returned to his body.

In Memorial, Tyler is on his bed having sex with Caroline when someone rings the doorbell, he goes downstairs to find Connor Jordan talking to his mother. Interrupting them, Tyler asks him if he could help Connor, when they shake hands, Tyler starts screaming due to pain, because Connor had vervain laced gloves. Connor then shoots him with wooden bullets which were carved to kill vampires. Later Tyler is seen with Stefan, Stefan removes the bullets from Tyler's chest telling him that if he was a regular vampire, he would be dead. At Mystic Falls Church, Tyler is seated with Caroline when Stefan asks him what is he doing there, he replies he's showing respect for the Council Members who passed away and Caroline added that she would rip his head off if he hurt Tyler. Later, he interrupts the service saying that he would like to talk about Pastor Young, who showed him how to work as a team and stand for his team. Before he completes his sentence, Connor shoots him in the chest. Caroline takes the bullet off Tyler's chest and as he wakes up he says "I'm gonna kill that bastard."

In The Rager, Tyler is attacked by Connor while in the hospital and drained of some werewolf venom. When Tyler is released from the hospital he goes home to find that Klaus has ordered some of his hybrid's to protect Tyler at all costs. Tyler is surprisingly reunited with Hayley, who helped him break his sire bond. One of Klaus' hybrids knows Hayley and told her that he protecting someone named Tyler. Klaus assumes Tyler and Hayley slept together.

In The Killer, Tyler is first seen with Damon and Elena talking about how to get into the Mystic Grill (Connor is holding Matt, April and Jeremy hostage there) and Tyler informs he called in other hybrids to help with the situation. Sometime later, Tyler is shown to be trying to convince Dean from following Klaus's orders. Dean says that if Tyler thinks he can stand up to Klaus, then he has to prove it. Tyler calls Klaus and says that he can do whatever he wants, as he is no longer sired to him. Klaus says he knows Tyler's little secret (Hayley) and says, "I’m sorry, mate. Are you going to answer or should I just assume you’re back to being… how did you phrase it? Ah, yes, my little bitch." Tyler hangs up, hands Dean back his phone and walks away. Later, Tyler and Hayley are shown to be upset over Dean's death. Hayley says they could have saved him. Caroline walks in, deeply angry and upset that Tyler lied to her. Caroline accuses Tyler of falling for Hayley, but Tyler says he never fell for her. "Then why would Klaus think that?" Caroline asks. Tyler replies, "Because I'd rather him think that then knowing the truth." Tyler then says that the other hybrids need to be set free, and that's what he and Hayley are trying to do, and if Klaus found out, he would kill them all.

In We All Go A Little Mad Sometimes, Tyler walks into a room to see Hayley being poured a shot. A hybrid Chris says that they are just paying their respects to Dean. Hayley pours a shot in Tyler's mouth and wipes her thumb across her bottom lip, sticking it in her mouth. Klaus walks into the room, remarking, "Well don't let me interrupt." Caroline then enters, saying she brought Tyler's stuff. Tyler says that it isn't a good time. Klaus soon leaves, and Caroline says, "Do you think he bought it?" Hayley says, "Hell, I bought it." Tyler says that Hayley and Caroline and good liars and kisses Caroline with Hayley looking on.

Tyler is later shown to be talking to Stefan, with Caroline with them. He explains to Stefan that Hayley helped him break his sire bond and he reveals that she has been helping Chris. "So you're telling me that Chris isn't sired anymore?" Caroline confirms that that is what Tyler is telling him.

Sometime later, Tyler and Hayley are saying goodbye to Chris, who is leaving town. Klaus enters, and grabs Chris' throat. Tyler intervenes and says that its not Chris' fault, but his for letting Elena out of his sight. Chris is let go by Klaus and attempts to leave, but is staked by Stefan. Chris falls to the floor and Jeremy enters with a cleaver in his hand and cuts Chris' head off.

Finally, Tyler is shown to be sitting on a couch with Hayley sleeping beside him. Caroline enters and Tyler says they were just paying their respects to Chris. Caroline says that they needed to help their friend. Tyler says that they helped their friend by handing over another. Caroline says that Chris wasn't their friend and Tyler says that Chris was a friend. He then asks how did she get Klaus to agree to give up one of his hybrids. Caroline reveals that she agreed to go on a date with him. Tyler gets up and angrily throws his glass against a wall behind her, causing Hayley to wake up. When Hayley asks what's going on, Tyler replies, "Nothing. Nothing at all. Just celebrating the life of a fallen hybrid friend."

In My Brother's Keeper, Tyler is with Hayley helping a hybrid named Kimberley break her sire bond. He states Caroline bought them another day and that he wants to go to the Miss Mystic Pageant with her. Hayley asks Tyler if the two are going, and Tyler doesn't want to go but finally agrees to.

Hayley and Tyler go to the pageant and sometime after their arrival, Damon asks Tyler how does Hayley know Professor Shane. Tyler thinks Damon is just being paranoid.

Hayley and Tyler later drink outside the Lockwood Mansion. Tyler asks Hayley about her parents and she says she never met them and once her adoptive parents found out about her wolf gene, they kicked her out. Tyler inquires Hayley on how she triggered her curse and Hayley replies that it was a boating accident and she thought she wasn't drunk. Tyler and Hayley catch sight of Klaus and Caroline walking across the lawn and he listens in on their conversation, which is if Klaus ever thought about being human again. Hayley asks Tyler on what they are saying and he is clearly jealous, stating that Klaus is saying a bunch of BS about being human again and when they get rid of him, the sooner the better.

Finally, at the abandoned barn, Kimberley is lying on the floor asking him if its over. Tyler says she successfully broke the sire bond and that they are one step closer from ending this.

In We'll Always Have Bourbon Street, Kimberley challenges Tyler as alpha of the pack. This is because of an earlier event, when Kimberley stopped another hybrid named Adrian from breaking his sire bond. Later, Hayley urged Tyler to take control back from Kimberley. However, this soon escalated into violence when Kimberley and Adrian kidnap and torture Caroline.

While searching for Caroline, Tyler informs Elena that the sire bond doesn't affect feelings, only how they act. The two find Kimberley with the other members of the pack and while fighting, Tyler threatens to rip Kimberley's heart out. Kimberley gives up and all the other members of the pack kneel to Tyler in respect.

In O Come, All Ye Faithful, Tyler and Hayley's plans for Klaus and the other hybrids commence. Hayley tells Tyler that she found a witch to help them preform the body jumping spell on Klaus. Tyler volunteers, much to Caroline's dismay and she tries to stop him. Eventually she comes up with the plan to put Klaus in Rebekah's body and bury the both of them.

Later, at the Winter Wonderland party, Hayley tells Tyler that she made a deal with someone who can help her find her real family and that she had no choice but to use the 12 hybrids for a sacrifice. Hayley also tells him that if he runs now, he can escape from Klaus's wrath. Tyler runs to the forest and looks around at all the dead bodies of the hybrids that Klaus had massacred. Meanwhile, Klaus has killed his mother, Carol.

In After School Special, Tyler had wallowed in grief, cutting himself off from Caroline and his friends. However, when Rebekah takes his friends hostage at the high school, she calls Tyler up and informs him of her deeds. Tyler goes to the school to rescue his friends but it's really a trap set by Rebekah who compels Tyler to turn into his wolf form, which would make him uncontrollably go after his friends. Tyler struggled during the transformation, trying to fight it but fully transformed, chasing his friends through the school. They managed to last long enough where he reverted back to his human form, lying naked in the gym where a tribute to his newly deceased mother was. Caroline found Tyler crying, saying that it was his fault that she had died due to his failed revolution against Klaus.

In Into the Wild, Tyler finds Klaus, who has been trapped by magical barriers Bonnie made, in the Gilbert house, where Elena and Jeremy had recently killed Klaus' brother, Kol. Tyler was gloating to Klaus about how his friends were going to find the cure and when they did, he'd turn Klaus mortal and figure out which way would be most fun to kill him. Klaus tried to plant the idea that if he is cured, his whole bloodline would be cured too, but Tyler disagreed. When Caroline came, Klaus took the opportunity to trick her into coming close before biting her with his hybrid bite. Caroline slowly began dying from the bite and Tyler was forced to beg Klaus to help her but Klaus refused, still upset with Tyler about his hybrid revolution. Tyler, knowing Klaus loved Caroline, left her on the floor in front of the Original, telling him that he could either save her or watch her die.

In Down the Rabbit Hole, while Klaus is still trapped in the Gilbert's living room, Tyler and Caroline find the Sword of Alexander, knowing that it has inscriptions about the cure. They find it Klaus' home before bringing it to the Gilbert's. Klaus grudgingly helps them translate the message of the sword. Upon learning that there was only one dose of the cure, though, it became apparent that they would not be able to use it on Klaus, Tyler's plan to kill him falls apart and he decides it's best to flee and go into hiding while he still has a chance. He says goodbye to Caroline, telling her that they'll meet again someday and if they don't, to just forget about him and move on with their lives. Tyler and leaves and Klaus is freed from the trap, telling Caroline he'll give Tyler a headstart.

In Stand By Me, although Tyler isn't seen, Caroline called him several times to inform him of Jeremy's death however it is unknown as of yet whether he received those calls or voicemails.

In Bring It On, Caroline continues to leave him voicemails, stating that she hopes that if she leaves enough of them, when Tyler comes back he'll be all caught up, then it will be like he never left. However, at the end of the episode, Matt asks Caroline to come over to Tyler's house, and reveals that he left the deed to his house in Matt's name, in order to provide a safe haven for her that Klaus can't reach. Reading the letter Tyler left for her, Caroline realizes that he is not actually going to come back, and she begins to break down into tears.

He appeared briefly in Pictures of You to Caroline, in which they shared a dance. As he was leaving, he was confronted by Klaus who asked if 'it was worth it to give Caroline a good prom night', before threatening him. As Klaus counts down, Tyler disappears from view, assumingly leaving Mystic Falls.

He will appear in Graduation.

Personality

Untriggered Werewolf

In the beginning of series, Tyler had a very aggressive, arrogant and selfish personality. He showed this many times for example when he had fights with Jeremy Gilbert over his girlfriend Vicki Donovan. Tyler behaved like this because of his werewolf gene. In Season 2, when his uncle Mason came to town, he learned how to control his anger and tone down his behavior. But after discovering that his family carried the werewolf gene, Tyler was scared to become a werewolf himself.

Werewolf

His fears came true when he accidentally killed Sarah and triggered the curse. Tyler felt guilty for killing Sarah and when he discovered Caroline Forbes is a vampire they became friends and she helped him get through with his first transformation but he almost killed her when he was a wolf but she came back when he was back in human form. After this she became his friend then girlfriend.

Hybrid

When Tyler became a hybrid he started being his old self and he became very loyal to Klaus because he took the pain of transformation. In season 4 we see a new Tyler, this Tyler puts his friends and family before himself and really cares about Caroline, in Memorial He showed great sacrifice and bravery in Pastor's funeral when he interrupted the chant and stood on the stage to get the hunter's attention and give his friends especially Elena a chance to escape from Connor's trap .

Physical Appearance

Tyler has tanned skin, short black hair and dark brown eyes. His height is about 5'7 to around 5'8. Tyler has a muscular and toned body. Like all werewolves, his eyes will turn yellow when he becomes very angry. In his werewolf form, Tyler's fur is black and his eyes are yellow. In human form, Tyler often wears black jeans with a t-shirt and a jacket. On special occasions, such as parties, he wears a black suit. In Season 2, he starts wearing leather jackets.

Relationships

Richard Lockwood

Tyler and his dad never had a good relationship, because he was a horrible parent and treated him badly. On several occasions, Richard has had to step in because Tyler did something in public where Richard felt ashamed of him. Whenever Tyler and Jeremy got into a fight at a Career Night at Mystic Falls High School, Richard and Alaric stopped it, and Richard brought the two of them outside. Tyler's dad tried to get the two of them to fight each other, even though they didn't want to fight anymore. Tyler's dad also had a talk to him when Tyler got into a fight with Matt and then pulled Tyler to the side and hit him and told Tyler That is the last time you ever embarrass this family again. On the Founder's Day, Richard is angry at Tyler for not going home when he was asked to. It was the night of rounding up the vampires and he didn't want Tyler to be in danger. or it could be he doesn't like it when his son disobeys him, and doesn't like it when he doesn't do what he says, and being controlling then he grabbed Tyler on the he`s arm, and says to his son if I tell you to do something you do it, then Tyler tells him to get off me, shows that he has finally stand up to his father, and that he finally has enough of his father`s controlling attitude. doing his father's funeral Jeremy Gilbert comes in Tyler`s father's study to comfort Tyler, saying that when my parents died everyone said my dad was a great guy, but Tyler said in your case that was true, your dad was a great guy, but my dad was a dick, shows that he wasn't above disrespecting his dead father at his funeral, and that he didn't have any respect for his father, after the funeral he revealed to his mother that he has always hated his father, for treating him badly, After Richard's death, Matt Donovan made fun of Tyler's dad and poured alcohol over his picture. Tyler gets mad or it could be that he believes that pouring alcohol on a dead person's picture is wrong. Tyler never talks about his father, because he doesn't want to be reminded, of what kind of person his father was, and once to forget about him completely.

Carol Lockwood

Tyler seems to have grown up with a distant, but somewhat positive relationship with his mother. It is only after the death of his father that Carol began to have a closer relationship with her son. When Mason Lockwood disappeared once again, Carol informed Tyler that "I guess it's just you and me now." Although he doesn't show it very well, Tyler is clearly fond of his mother, even returning to town after her accident.

Caroline Forbes

When Tyler triggered his curse, Caroline Forbes wanted to help him. Though Damon demanded her not to be his friend, she did. Tyler once asked whether she is a werewolf, Caroline laughed and said she is a vampire after a skirmish. When the first Full Moon came, Caroline helps him through the first transformation and it seems they form a special bond. The two become closer and eventually began a romantic relationship. Due to Klaus falling in love with  Caroline, their relationship has become strained.Klaus promised that he will kill Tyler and Caroline pleased Klaus to let him live.Klaus told her to tell Tyler to leave town and hide which after a painful goodbye he did. They leave each vowing that they will find a way to be together again.

Powers and Abilities

Hybrids share inherent powers of both vampires and werewolves such as Super Strength,' Super Speed, Heightened 'Senses, Healing Factor, and Mind Compulsion which are enhanced either with age or by wolf form. Furthermore, they possess a wide array of additional powers including:

• Werewolf Bite: Due to their werewolf heritage, a hybrid has a bite which is fatal to vampires, but the hybrid bite takes effect quicker than a normal werewolf bite. Werewolf venom is always accessible to them as opposed to their werewolf counterparts who can use it only when transformed.

• Transformation Control: Hybrids have the ability to transform at will and anytime that they desire. This makes them able to avoid obligatory turning during full moons.

• Lycanthrope Enhancement: Hybrids are capable of showing their wolf-eyes when displaying their abilities.

• Dream Manipulation: Hybrids can control dreams and subconscious like vampires. They can produce and modify dreams, bestow nightmares or lucid dreaming. Other effects of this ability is the distortion of reality and trapping in dreams.

• Emotional Control: Due to their vampire heritage, hybrids are able to exert certain control over their own emotions. They can turn off their humanity.

• Immortality: Hybrids stop aging once turned. Upon their transformation, a hybrid becomes immune to all conventional illnesses, diseases, virus and infection and therefore will live forever unless they are killed due to a weapon, weakness or methods that might kill a normal vampire or werewolf.

• Mind Compulsion: Hybrids can compel the minds of humans.

  

• Healing Factor: Given their joint vampire and werewolf heritage, a hybrid's ability to recover from injury is far greater than those of either individual parent species.

• Super Speed: Hybrids are faster than any werewolf or some vampires. Hybrids can use this abilities in human and wolf form. This appears to be one of Tyler's more pronounced traits as a Hybrid, able to take advantage of Klaus' 5 second headstart.

• Super Strength: Hybrids are much stronger than werewolves or vampires, but because of their vampire heritage their abilities get stronger with age, just like vampires and werewolves. Their wolf form will boast their power due to the werewolf side. A newly turned hybrid can go toe-to-toe with a 165-170 year old vampire such as Damon, who was on the verge of dying at the hands of Ray Sutton until Stefan saved him.

• Super Agility: Hybrids possess superhuman agility. They can move, jump, climb, and run incredibly fast without difficulty or exhaustion.

• Petrova Doppelgänger Blood: Drinking Petrova doppelgänger blood will complete the transition from werewolf into a hybrid.
• Daytime Walking - Since hybrids are capable of consuming food other than blood due to their werewolf heritage, they do not have the weaknesses regarding sunlight nature caused vampires to suffer from. They can move around during the day and in the sun without the use a day walking ring.
• Hybrid Claws - Hybrids can grow claws from their nails, even well they are still in their human form, it is unknown how sharp a hybrid claws are, well klaus was still in tyler's body, it was shows that a hybrid's claws is sharp enough, to penetrate a hybrid's very durable skin, and is able to rip another hybrid's heart out.
• Silver - Due to their werewolf heritage, magic bonded to silver doesn't affect a hybrid. Weapons made of silver might wound them, but the wound heals at super-normal rates than regular wounds.

Weaknesses

• Gilbert Device - A hybrid can be affected by the Gilbert device.

• Vervain : Hybrids are affected by vervain like their vampire counterparts.

• Wolfsbane: Hybrids are affected to wolfsbane like their werewolf counterparts.

• Uninvited Invitation: Due to their vampire heritage, hybrids are unable to enter a home without an invitation.

• Magic: Witches are able to give supernatural aneurysms that cause the blood vessels of non-original hybrids to explode.

• Decapitation: The act of dismembering or removing the head of a hybrid will result in death.

• Heart Extraction: The act of removing a hybrid's heart will result in death.

• Mind Compulsion: An Original can compel hybrids because they are half vampire.

• Hybrid Bloodline: Hybrids who were turned by Klaus who turned others will die if Klaus is staked with the White Oak Stake.

• Hunter's Curse: If a hybrid kills a member of The Brotherhood of the Five then they will be tormented by the hunter until they kill themselves or if the hunter is replaced then they will be free of torment.

Name

• "Tyler" comes from an English surname, meaning "tiler of roofs". As a first name, it became popular after the 1980s.

Behind the scenes

• The casting call was: "18 years old, athletic, cocky, attractive, and a bit of a jerk, he's an alpha male who demonstratively marks his territory (i.e. Vicki) every chance he gets, particularly in front of Jeremy. Tyler can't resist needling Matt about the fact that Elena seems to be falling for the new guy, Stefan...

In the books

• In the novels, Tyler's surname is "Smallwood" and he turns into a werewolf with the help of Klaus (Sue Carson is sacrificed in a ritual of blood). In the series, Tyler turns into a werewolf with the intervention of Katherine.
• Tyler Smallwood and Caroline were allied against Elena and Stefan. In the series, Tyler and Matt were allied against Stefan but then Matt learns to accept Stefan and approves of Stefan and his relationship with Elena. Caroline helps Tyler with the death of Sarah and the werewolf transformation.
• Tyler's family are direct descendants of the Smallwoods that were present at the founding of Fell's Church.
• Tyler Smallwood has jet black hair, pale skin, very dark eyes. He is described to be very tall (6'3"" to 6'7") with a broad, husky and muscular physique.
• Tyler Smallwood is much taller and and twice as broad then Stefan. On the show, Stefan is taller then Tyler.
• Stefan saves Elena from Tyler Smallwood sexually assaulting her. Tyler has been antagonistic towards Stefan and Elena ever since.

• Tyler is one of the two antagonists of "The Awakening" and "The Struggle", eventually becomes a recurring character in "The Fury" and finally a minor antagonist of "Dark Reunion".
• Tyler Smallwood does not appear in the trilogies "The Return Series" and "The Hunters Series".

Trivia

• Out of all the main characters he has missed the most episodes the other being Jenna.
• Both in the books and series he has a relationship with Caroline.
• He didn't appear in five episodes in a row in season two, beating Bonnie, who missed four episodes in a row in season one.
• He's the only main character throughout the series as a whole, who misses the most episodes in large gaps and has the most absences, even Alaric who was introduced mid-way through season 1, has appeared in more episodes than Tyler.
• In the series, it was unknown that Lockwoods have werewolf gene until Bad Moon Rising. But it was hinted in The Turning Point. After the scene Tyler hit Jeremy, he asked him "What is your problem, man?" when a full moon can be seen in the sky, explaining his aggressive behaviors.
• Tyler has interacted with all the main characters, except Jenna.
• Tyler is the only living main characters who have never been bitten by a vampire.
• He was turned into a Hybrid in The Reckoning.
• Tyler is the first successfully created hybrid, due to drinking a sample of doppelgänger's blood during his transition.
• Before discovering the bloodline of the main characters, the only one of the protagonists who would have died if Klaus was destroyed, would be Tyler. In the books, after the Klaus' defeat, Tyler escapes and does not return to town.

• And I Must Scream - Before being turned into a hybrid by Klaus, Tyler had to change into a werewolf each full moon after triggering the curse. The process initially took hours to complete its excruciating transition. Also can be said for what he needed to do to break the sire bond to Klaus.
• He is introduced as a Jerk Jock, with a VERY short temper.
• Freudian Excuse: On season 1 we believe his behavior is due to his very aggressive father.
• But in season 2 we learn it's because of Lycantropy - He is a latent Werewolf.
• Like many Involuntary Shapeshifters , his transformation into werewolf are VERY PAINFUL.
• Mr Fanservice - winds up naked after transforming back from werewolf. Unlike Hulk he does not have Magic Pants.
• By the end of Season 2 he has morphed into a Jerk with a Heart of Gold.
• In We'll Always Have Bourbon Street, when all the hybrids submit to him as their Alpha, it was his Awesome Moment of Crowning.
• By coincidence, that was also his Crowning Moment of Awesome!
