Like Bonnie, shouldn't it be passed on through the family?

Bonnie got her witch gene directly from her mother. But with Silas and Damon/Stefan there's almost 2000 years in between them and the witch gene had most likely faded out by then, due to mating with humans and or not using magic. If your parent is a witch then you will have the witch gene but you won't always activate it (for instance, Esther was a witch and ALL 7 of her kids had the witch gene but only 2 - Freya and Kol - activated it). It could also be slightly possible that Stefan/Damon were untapped witches but just never knew about it. But since their last known witch ancestor was 2000 years ago, that's not likely.

You see, this is where The Vampire Diaries writers screw up.

While what TheCorpseBride10 is saying is entirely accurate, there is still the Qetsiyah - Katerina example. Although Qetsiyah lived over 2000 years ago, Katerina still retained the ability to practice. Although we can say we know why the witch gene stopped; Katerina became a vampire. This still doesn't explain why the witch gene was still present for Katherine 2000 years later, but it was not present for Stefan and Damon.

Amara wasn't a witch (the whole reason Silas wanted to destroy the anchor so he wouldn't be stuck on the other side since Amara wasn't due to bein mortal). Katerina got the witch gene from her father's side.
Sorry, that was meant to say Qetsiyah, changed it.
Qetsiyah was Bonnie's ancestor not Katerina's, so what her species was wouldn't have any affect on Kat's.
Ah yes, I got them mixed up. Thank you for correcting me.
It's possible that the Bennett bloodline just kept mating with other witches throughout history which would explain their power as well as the fact that they're still in existence.
Silas' descendants were possibly banished when he became an immortal and eventually, they just stopped practicing and mating with other witches, thus the gene faded over time.
And Amara's bloodline was relatively normal until Katherine's father came into the picture. It kind of makes sense as Amara did hang around Travelers so somewhere down the line, one of them married her descendant and brought the witch gene that passed onto Katherine and Nadia. But since the Petrovas didn't want to practice magic, they probably stayed away from witches until the gene just dissapeared.
