The Vampire Diaries Wiki
Witch spell link This page is an official policy on The Vampire Diaries Wiki. It has wide acceptance among editors and is considered a standard that all users should follow. When editing this page, please ensure that your revision reflects consensus. When in doubt, discuss first on the talk page.

This Layout Guide is an official guide as to how an in-universe article should be structured. Generally this guide is to be used for character articles, but can be adapted to almost any in-universe article by leaving out sections that are impertinent. By adhering to this layout guide we will add more uniformity across all the pages. This will create a more professional look for The Vampire Diaries Wiki. In addition, if you are unsure of how to start an article use this guide to provide a starting point. If you have any questions or comments feel free to discuss the Layout Guide on the talk page. This layout guide was adapted from Wookieepedia's Layout Guide.

If you have any suggestion/objection, please add it to the talk page.

Article Maintenance

  • Title: This template is used to alter the way the title appears when viewing an article. It is mostly used on articles that have disambiguations, such as season articles (such as The Originals (Episode) to display The Originals as the title) or characters with the same name. It is to be used like so:
PAGENAME
  • Youmay: This template is used on articles in which there are disambiguations for. It provides a template at the top of the article to link all of the disambiguations together; to notify a user that they may have come to the wrong article accidentally.
Caroline Forbes from the novels
  • Defaultsort: This is useful for organizing articles on their respective category pages. We tend to sort them by the convention: Surname, Forename. On episode articles, we sort them by their respective season, episode number. For example, season three episode eight, Ordinary People, becomes 308.
{}
{}
  • Interwiki links: These can be useful for those who do not speak English. They can be used to indicate that there is an international version of the article available. It will then be linked in a drop down in the header. Most articles will have an interlanguage link, however, some do not. If you are not sure, please check the wiki you are trying to link. They follow the format language code: Article. Make sure you are using the right language code.
de:Damon Salvatore
  • Help Needed: This template is useful to indicate to users that an article is in need of upating, either because it is missing episode summaries, or needs images. You do not need to add the categories as the template does it automatically.

images

Article Layout

  • Quotes: Opening quotes should be used on every article page, and should be directly related to the said article. There are three types of quotes, those for The Vampire Diaries related articles, those for The Originals related articles, and those for Legacies related articles, and those for general articles/those in articles that are related to any of the topics.
    • Please only use TVD/TO/LGC quote templates for opening quotes, any further quotes can use the traditional quote box. Links of the speakers should be bolded.

  • Infoboxes: There are many types of infoboxes, you can view them all here. For those on character articles, we use one infobox, with a variable to dictate its show, and therefore, its color. The Vampire Diaries articles have red themed infoboxes, The Originals have purple and Legacies have green.
{{Character |universe = tvd

or {{Character |universe = to
or {{Character |universe = legacies

  • Legacies Species: Species that appear in Legacies episode should not have their own character/species article unless they are recurring/main character/species. One article should be set out to detail both character and species on the same page. For example, Dragon, Arachne, etc., all detail the species attributes/history, but also the only character that appeared as these species. This helps keep information concentrated and avoids unnecessary page creation for species that only occur once. These articles will have both character categories, and species categories as well as a "Throughout Legacies Series" section. Please see an administrator for additional information.
  • Images: Images are changed only when a new relevant image (such as new season promotional pictures, etc.) are added to the wiki. They must not be changed to images of lesser quality or less character-defining images. These images are usually uploaded by administrators or moderators, but regular users are able to upload them too if their image is of good quality.
