We defeated my mother, and her witches, because we stood united. That is how we will face all our enemies. As a family.
Klaus to Hayley

Rebirth is the first episode of the second season of The Originals and the twenty-third episode of the series overall.

Summary[]

REBUILDING HOMES AND RECRUITING NEW FAMILY — After months of being holed up inside his compound, Klaus enlists the help of Elijah and Marcel in plotting his revenge against the Guerrera werewolves, and vows to take down anyone who poses a threat to baby Hope's existence. Elijah watches helplessly as Hayley spirals downward while mourning the loss of her daughter and struggling to adapt to her new hybrid status. Exiled by the Guerrera werewolves, who now control the French Quarter, Marcel is still reeling over the destruction of his vampire family, and attempts to rebuild his home with the help of Josh. Elsewhere, Cami, who is attempting to regain some normalcy in her life, seeks comfort in a surprising place. Lastly, Davina continues her plan to use Mikael against Klaus, but gets sidetracked when she meets the mysterious, yet charming Kaleb, who holds a few secrets of his own.

Plot[]

Rebekah holds Hope in a rocking chair, telling her a fairytale about their lives—the happenings of the first season, and that the king (Klaus) and his noble brother (Elijah) will not rest until their enemies are vanquished and Hope can reunite with her family and live happily after ever.

Elijah is at an abandoned building talking with a few men. The Guerreras want to turn it into a casino, but Elijah tells them that the under the Preservation Act of 1966, they cannot allow the Guerreras to demolish one of the city's original foundries.

Klaus throws one of his canvases across the room, wanting his enemies' blood instead of being holed up doing artwork. He needs to act. Elijah tells him he's found the last of the twelve rings forged with his blood—the men he was talking to at the abandoned building had those rings on their fingers. Klaus smiles. Elijah wants to act just as soon too, because he's worried about Hayley.

Hayley is in the bayou, at the camp which is now empty. She picks up a doll, and she gets emotional.

Marcel and Cami are physically intimate, but Cami wants no strings attached. She tells Marcel he's not missing much on the other side—the Guerreras have the werewolves on every corner, and the humans who know about the supernatural do not care as long as the money from tourism keeps coming their way. Cami also tells him Davina is back in high school.

Davina is at a music store, buying ancient Icelandic folk music. She sees a boy, Kaleb, and they smile at each other. Oliver comes in. The other Harvest girl, Cassie, has been making the werewolves moonlight rings. Oliver outs Joe Dalton, the store owner, as a vampire. Oliver and a few other werewolves try to attack him, but Davina uses a pain infliction spell.

Francesca is upset that a witch got in the way of Oliver and the werewolves killing Joe, but Cassie says Davina is not in their coven anymore, so the rules don't apply to her. Francesca still wants the rules to apply to Davina.

Francesca is worried, because Klaus has not set foot outside his house in months and all the waiting is making her lose her mind. She's paid the witches and werewolves to protect her, and she tells everyone who aren't paid to protect her to leave.

Cassie, who is really Esther inside Cassie's body, praises Klaus and Elijah's impressive strategy of making Francesca crack under pressure. She says Francesca will be her own undoing, but is looking forward to seeing how impressive her sons are when they come up against their own mother.

Cami is walking with a coffee in her hand, when two werewolves come up behind her. They don't say anything, but Cami tells them to tell Francesca she's just trying to live a normal life. She hands them her coffee, and leaves.

She goes to the compound, to see Klaus. Klaus swooshes up behind her, but doesn't let her see him. Elijah arrives and tells her Klaus doesn't want to see her. Cami tells Elijah that she has werewolves watching her movements, and the city's being run by gangsters while he and Klaus do nothing about it. Marcel took them out a hundred years earlier, and asks if he might be up for lending them a hand. Elijah simply tells her, "Thank you for coming, Camille," and gestures for her to leave. But before she leaves, she tells him that she knows they don't believe Marcel killed Baby Hope. They have a weapon across the river, they just need to use him. Elijah and Klaus agree on liking her spirit.

Marcel and Josh are outdoors, with a group in front of them. Josh says it's the twentieth group he's brought to Marcel, that there has to be a keeper amongst them. Marcel compels them not to be afraid, and asks them if they remember believing anything was possible as a kid, then grew up and things didn't turn out as planned; but still there was a part of them that would dream, wanting to be a part of something bigger and worth fighting for.

He demonstrates his vampire strength and throws one of them, and Josh saves him. Marcel says that they'll know the offer still exists to join him and be a vampire, even though they'll forget what they've seen.

Josh bets on the dark-haired girl, but Marcel doubts that any of them are up for being a vampire. Marcel wants warriors, not tough guys or tough-looking guys. Klaus arrives. He answers Josh's question on the difference: A warrior fights for what he believes in, and fights for his family.

Elijah is taking apart Hope's nursery, and Hayley asks what he's doing. Elijah says they need to keep up the illusion; months have passed and it's the appropriate time. Hayley objects. Elijah promises she'll have vengeance on Francesca, but Hayley wants the room left alone until then. Elijah leaves.

At the attic, Mikael throws a stake at Davina, but Davina teases him that he can't hurt her. He can't kill Klaus until she figures out a way to save her friends. She orders him to feed from her wrist for a few seconds, and tells him that she's studied Esther's spell book. She's close to finding out.

Marcel says the Guerreras have the numbers. They have packs from all around, but Klaus says they only need to wipe out the twelve with the moonlight rings. But they can't just go out and cut off their hands, because the witches and werewolves may have the White Oak Stake. It went missing on the night Hope left with Rebekah. Marcel says he doesn't have it, and it wouldn't do him any good anyhow, because it would kill him too, along with every vampire they've sired.

Klaus wants to attack the wolves once the moon hits its apex. Joe Dalton arrives. He fought the Guerreras back in 1925. Klaus asks if he'd like to get back in the fight. Joe asks what he has in mind. Klaus says he's been thinking the whole thing wrong—he gave Marcel a reason for him not making a move, so what about the Guerreras? Marcel realizes the werewolves don't have the Stake.

At the compound, Elijah says it's too risky, but Klaus is willing to gamble. Hayley just wants Francesca dead. As planned, Joe tells Francesca that Klaus believes they have the stake. Cassie performs the spell to find it, but she can't. Francesca orders Joe to tell her the truth of the whole story. Joe tells her that there's a rumor it fell in the hands of the priest.

Two werewolves smash Cami's home, and she gives them an address. Elijah, who is hiding outside her window, nods. The plan is working.

The werewolves come to the place Francesca wanted to buy, but Marcel's been stockpiling wolfsbane for months. He turns on the sprinklers, and the wolves scream in pain.

Hayley, at the compound, does her part. Elijah is at Francesca's house, and attacks the wolves there.

Francesca smirks because he can't come in, but Elijah talks of how pleased he is that the city took his suggestion to protect the house's heritage status and invoke eminent domain. Francesca's smile turns into a frown. Elijah steps in, uninvited.

Klaus is painting with a werewolf's blood. Elijah left Francesca to Hayley. She's driving, running away, when Hayley attacks.

At Marcel's place, one of the women from the group comes in. She's the woman that Josh bet on would make a good vampire.

Hayley rips apart the nursery. She killed Francesca, but she doesn't feel better. Nothing about her, being a hybrid, is natural, and she hates it. When she was living with her pack, she finally understood the purity and nobility of being a wolf, but she killed eight wolves before she got to Francesca—eight of her own people.

At the music store, which is now closed, Davina and Kaleb meet again.

Klaus blames himself for everything. If he had just accepted Hayley's pregnancy instead of playing king, he wouldn't have lost his daughter.

Klaus does his best to comfort Hayley. He tells her that he and his siblings stood against their mother, united, and that is how they'll face all their other enemies. As a family.

Cami meets her new advisor who sponsored her residency, who turns out to be Vincent (Finn possessing his body.)

Vincent (Finn) tells Cassie (Esther) that he's forgotten what it feels like to be vulnerable, but Cassie tells him that at least he's not in the body of a teenager. Kaleb loves his new body.

Cassie says their brothers did her a favor in killing Francesca. Now she can start controlling the witches and werewolves, and take root in their new home.

Trivia[]

  • Antagonist: Francesca Guerrera and Guerrera Werewolves
  • Eleven of the twelve Guerrera werewolves with moonlight rings, including Francesca and her brothers, are killed by Klaus, Marcel, Elijah, and Hayley.
    • Francesca specifically was killed by Hayley for her part in the Bayou bombing and her complicity in the attempted murder of Hope, while Francesca's brothers were killed by Elijah.
    • However, Oliver was the only ring-clad werewolf who life was spared, due to Hayley's emotional attachment to the Crescent Wolf Clan.
  • Davina has been using Esther's Grimoires to create her own spell that will unlink Josh and Marcel from Klaus' Vampire Bloodline so Mikael will be able to kill Klaus without harming her friends in the process.
  • Davina is also revealed to have left the French Quarter Coven and returned to high school.
  • Davina has been buying vinyl records of Icelandic folk music for Mikael to listen to in the attic of St. Anne's Church.
  • Cami and Marcel have been continuing their intimate relationship, though Cami ultimately breaks up with Marcel at the end of the episode in an effort to separate herself from the supernatural drama of the town.
  • Marcel, under the effects of Klaus' compulsion, does not remember that he played a part at ensuring the survival of Hope Mikaelson by the end of Season One, and is under the impression that the Guerreras very likely killed Hope.
    • As a result, he is suspicious as to why Klaus and Elijah had yet to make a move on them in the time since Hope's "death."
  • In 1925 the Guerrera pack numbered about one hundred total wolves when Marcel and his army attacked and nearly wiped them out. It is also revealed that the modern-day Guerrera Pack has recruited wolves from all over the country, though only twelve of them had the moonlight rings that Klaus and Elijah sought to steal back.
  • Davina reveals that Cassie (possessed by Esther) has been helping the witches craft new moonlight rings for the Guerrera Pack. Fortunately, since they do not use Klaus' blood, the use of them to prevent a wolf from turning on a full moon doesn't weaken Klaus like the rings Genevieve made did.
  • Esther cannot find the White Oak stake with a locator spell, and is impressed that whoever has it (Davina) has managed to cloak it from even her.
  • Esther tells Finn that his brothers are excellent strategists and that Francesca will be her own undoing.
  • This episode firmly establishes that the rules of invitation when it comes to vampires visiting the homes of humans also applies to triggered werewolves, as Francesca was convinced that she was protected from Elijah's intrusion as long as she didn't invite him in.
    • However, Elijah managed to get around this restriction by compelling a city worker to invoke imminent domain on Francesca's home, which made it essentially public property and thus open to everyone without invitation, allowing Elijah to enter and kill the Guerrera brothers.
  • As of this episode, all members of the Original Family are alive in one form or another.
  • Klaus plans to salvage the Mikaelsons' relationship with the werewolves by helping Hayley reclaim her status as Queen of the Crescent wolves.
  • Elijah destroys the twelve enchanted black kyanite stones from the moonlight rings that caused Klaus' weakness on the full moon by using the elements of water and fire to destroy their spell.

Esther: "A thousand years ago, I was one of the greatest witches that has ever lived. Now I've returned. Let's get to work. We have a family reunion to plan."

Rebekah: "Once upon a time, there was a majestic king, who lived with his noble brother in a colorful kingdom where music and art were celebrated. The king did not foresee having a child, but he lived in an enchanted land where all things were possible. In time, he was blessed with a beautiful baby daughter for whom he wished only peace and happiness. Still, the king had demons who pursued him. There was a ruthless beast who wanted to take the kingdom for her own. Armed with a pack of untamed creatures, she drove the other magical beings from the land. And there was a wicked sorceress with enchanted stones that weakened the king on every full moon. Seeing the shadow his enemies cast upon his home, the king was driven to send his beloved princess away, convincing all who remained that she was forever lost. The king, in his sorrow, turned away from the world. The castle closed its doors and the kingdom fell. Some say that the only light that shines in the castle illuminates the shadow of the once mighty king in the room meant for his child. But as the ruthless beasts took rule over the fallen king's realm, little did they that he and his brother would not rest until their enemies were vanquished. For they believed that one day, they would heal their kingdom and bring their princess home, so that she might live happily ever after."

Cami: "I know your family is grieving, but I know you don't believe those rumors that Marcel killed the baby. So, if you want help taking down the Guerreras, you have a weapon across the river just waiting to be fired. Use it."
