The Night of the Comet Festival celebrates the comet that passes over Mystic Falls every 145 years. The first comet that had passed was in the year 1864, the next in the year 2009, meaning the next one won't come until the year 2154.
During 2009 people watched the comet and lit candles in a cup, lighting any other persons candle that wanted to join. Stefan explained to Elena about it appearing every 145 years and tells her that the comet has been traveling across space for 1000s of years, all alone...a ball of snow and ice trapped on a path it can't escape. Bonnie had thought that the comet was a harbinger of evil, probably because back when it was first around the town was in hysteria and fear because of vampires.

- This event happened in the Season One episode The Night of the Comet.
- Emily Bennett actually used this comet to gain enough power to entomb the tomb vampires.
- Qetsiyah also mentions channeling a comet to have enough power to do a anchor switch but dismiss the idea upon realizing that the comet won't be back for billion of years, although it would be another 145 years.
