|This article is about Ley lines from the novel series. You may be looking for Magical Hotspots from the TV Series.|
Ley lines (also spelled Leigh) are described as cracks in the earth’s makeup created by rare occurrences and the presence of strong supernatural beings. The overload of Power in the atmosphere of an area results in it turning into a hotspot, marked forever — the more the power used and more supernatural beings and recurrences, the stronger the ley lines. Once an area is marked with permanent hotspots, the raw power acts as a beacon to supernatural beings, they find themselves drawn to the area in which the ley lines are strongest, the more skilled in their Power, the more conscious they are of it's visibility, though others don't even realize this fact at all (shown by Bonnie McCullough, a powerful psychic witch who never saw the ley lines in her town until she studied the use of her abilities, even then it took time before she could see the lines of power). Fell’s Church had always been marked and attracted the Salvatore Brothers, Katherine von Swartzschild, Klaus, Shinichi, Misao, Inari and even the Guardians.
Throughout the Vampire Diaries NovelsEdit
Ley lines are first mentioned in Midnight.
Elena describes the ley lines as being cracks that look like raw power veins in the earth that one cannot be seen without channelling power to the eyes. Ley lines are exclusive to supernatural beings with Power and cannot be found if, for an example, a human dug into the earth with a shovel as they are completely incoporeal and spiritual but can be reached by beings with psychic and magical powers.
Powers And AbilitiesEdit
Ley lines can be channelled as doppelgangers and rare occarrences can. The level of power one town's ley lines can give is obscure, but Fell's Church was strong enough to power and draw Old Ones, Kitsune and vampires. Later, Elena drew on them for power to destroy all current malach in the town as well as the restore the purity of her town through Wings of Purification
