Trivia

  • Antagonists: Mikael (1919) and Céleste (present).
  • Narrator: Elijah Mikaelson.
  • Title meaning: a reference to a theater in Paris open between 1897 and 1962 which specialized in horror shows; it is possibly a reference to Mikael's destruction of New Orleans and also of Klaus's hunt for Rebekah.
  • This is Mikael's first appearance since Always and Forever the premiere of The Originals.
  • Rebekah and Marcel are running from Klaus, much like Katerina Petrova, Rose and Trevor did back in the fifteenth century.
  • In this episode, we learn that it's possible to avoid being tracked by a locator spell with what's known as a cloaking spell.
  • Mikael is revealed to have struck a deal with Marcel in 1919, in which he promised to spare Rebekah's life so long as Marcel told him Klaus' whereabouts.
    • While making this deal, Mikael also revealed that Rebekah is his favorite child. However, it could been because she reminded him of Freya, or of Esther.
  • Celeste was killed in this episode when Elijah, suspicious of her intentions, informed Monique about the likelihood of her defecting from the witches and taking the Harvest power. This led Monique to cast a spell that trapped Celeste in her resurrected original body and prevented her from possessing another, allowing him to stab her with Papa Tunde's Blade and kill her for good.
    • This could have been considered foreshadowing of Esther's resurrection at the end of the season when she "body-jumped" into Cassie, as her grimoire is what held the spell that allowed Monique to trap Celeste in her original body, demonstrating her skill and understanding of spirit possession spells. It is also possible that she got the idea from Celeste during her time with the Ancestors.
  • This episode marks the first time that we see Elijah's full vampire face, instead of just his red, veiny eyes, when he bares his fangs and hisses at both Celeste and Klaus at the cemetery.
    • This episode marked the first time Elijah is seen biting someone's neck, when he attacked Celeste in Sabine's body.
  • Céleste makes for Hayley a herbal potion that is to be used on the next full moon to reverse the Crescent Curse on her pack.
  • Klaus, Rebekah and Elijah are trapped in Lafayette Cemetery by Celeste at the end of the episode.
  • This episode is also the first time that the theme "Klaus' Mercy" was featured in The Originals, since it was used in several episodes of The Vampire Diaries.
  • Davina was resurrected in this episode after Celeste's death caused the power that she stole from the Harvest to be returned to her.

Cultural References

  • Le Théâtre du Grand-Guignol, also known as the Grand Guignol – was a theatre in the Pigalle area of Paris (at 20 bis, rue Chaptal). From its opening in 1897 until its closing in 1962, it specialized in naturalistic horror shows.
  • Its name is often used as a general term for graphic, amoral horror entertainment, a genre popular from Elizabethan and Jacobean theatre (for instance Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus, and Webster's The Duchess of Malfi and The White Devil), to today's splatter films.
  • Some say that Théâtre des Vampires in Anne Rice's The Vampire Chronicles was inspired by Le Grand Guignol, however Anne claims she did not know of this until after writing her novels.
  • The scene with the fire at the opera house is a nod to the scene in Interview With A Vampire where Louis sets fire to the Théâtre des Vampires.
  • Grand Guignol is the second full-length studio album released by John Zorn's band Naked City in 1992 on the Japanese Avant label.
