Gudren was a character of The Vampire Diaries novel series. She was the handmaiden of Katherine von Swartzschild presumably under the employment of Elizabeth Morrow-Gilbert and Baron von Swartzschild.

Appearance[]

She is described as having a face like a flat white plate and eyes like black glass.

Early History[]

At the age of fifteen, Katherine became very ill and it was presumed that her death was imminent. Unwilling to watch her suffer from her illness, Gudren paid a desperate visit to an Old One named Klaus and asked him to cure her. Although Katherine had no say in the matter, Klaus agreed to help by transforming her into a vampire.

After the feud between Damon, Katherine, and Stefan, Gudren helped Katherine fake her own death. When the two brothers came to Katherine's room, she refused to talk to Damon, but did so with Stefan and told them about Katherine being upset about what happened.

The Vampire Diaries[]

Gudren does not appear in TV series. Instead, Katherine's friend and traveling handmaiden is an ancestor of Bonnie Bennett, Emily Bennett portrayed by Bianca Lawson.

Name[]

  • Gudren comes from the Old Norse Guðrún, meaning "god's secret lore", which derived from the elements guð "god" and rún "secret lore". Another alternate spelling of the name is Gudrun. In Norse legend, Gudrun was the wife of Sigurd.

Trivia[]

  • While Gudren was human in the books, Emily was a witch in the TV series.
  • Gudren helped Katherine fake her own death in the books, while Emily helped protect the vampires who were intended to be burned by magically sealing them inside of a tomb to save Katherine's life, not knowing that she had been freed by George Lockwood.
  • Gudren refers to Katherine as "mistress Katerina".
