And make no mistake, we are one unit, one army! We are family. Family is not determined by blood, but by who you fight for, and who will fight for you! Tonight, we will feed on the blood of our enemies, and if we die, we will be reborn, and we will feed again! We are the Brotherhood of the Damned, and we cannot be defeated!
Marcel to his brotherhood

Brotherhood of the Damned is the eleventh episode of the second season of The Originals and the thirty-third episode of the series overall.

Summary[]

FAMILY IS WHO YOU FIGHT FOR — Armed with more power than ever, Finn creates an elaborate spell that allows him to take the upper hand and trap his brothers Klaus and Elijah. Realizing that Kol is also in trouble, Davina has no choice but to team up with the Originals to help. After the deadly events in the previous episode, Marcel must try to calm his volatile pack of suffering vampires, while remembering his days as a soldier during World War I when his leadership skills were equally brought to the test. Finally, Hayley finds herself conflicted when she learns that she and Jackson must participate in extreme and unconventional rituals prior to their wedding, which will put them both in a dangerous position. Cami also appears.

Plot[]

Klaus has searched everywhere, but Finn is nowhere to be found. His Plan B is for Davina to locate him. Marcel tells Klaus he got bitten, and Klaus promises he'll get Marcel out of the compound.

In a flashback to 1916, Klaus is yelling at Marcel who has enlisted in the war. Klaus doesn't want him to leave, because for him, it's the same as abandoning family. Marcel leaves, anyway.

Meanwhile, the city is preparing festivities for Carillon Eve—the locals shroud the eyes of statues of angels, so that the dead can walk among them for a night without judgement. The bells ringing in the background wake the dead and guide them to eternal rest.

Marcel sees Joe, someone who fought with him during the war, but Gia snaps him out of it, and Joe is gone.

In flashback, Joe figures either Marcel has guardian angels healing him after every bullet, or he's something else entirely.

Davina sees where Finn is, and that he's channeling both of Klaus' parents. But before they can leave to find him, Klaus falls unconscious.

Elijah and Camille talk. He reveals what the red door is, a memory but also a metaphor. It's where his unspeakable deeds dwell in darkness. It's a red door, because it's the place where the first woman Elijah ever loved said she loved him in return, but also the place where he laid her body after he took her life. No one, not even Klaus, knows that Elijah killed Tatia, whom he loved just as deeply. Klaus still believes Esther killed her. Elijah collapses from Finn's spell.

Kol collapses too, while Josh and Gia want to feed and satisfy their hunger. They also find out Marcel has been bitten by a wolf.

Klaus, Elijah and Kol meet in a chambre de chasse, a place where witches bring their prey for mental target practice. Finn appears to them, but he is untouchable.

The animal heads represent each of them—Klaus is a wolf, Elijah a stag, Kol a fox, and Finn is a boar. Finn reveals that his spell on the compound will disappear at sundown, and all the hungry vampires will feed on the local people.

In flashback, Marcel is now Corporal, and had told Joe of his vampirism. Joe wants him to feed, but Marcel wants only the enemy's blood...the Germans they're fighting. Just then, he gets called away, and meets Klaus, who tries to persuade him to come home.

Finn takes Kol out of the astral hunt room, and Kol reveals what Finn has planned.

Hayley meets Jackson's grandmother. One of the rituals they have to undergo is the rite of divulgement. The two alphas have to smoke the root of a blue calamus flower, linking their minds and hearts. The unification ceremony won't work unless they're completely honest and have no lies.

Hayley can't go through with it because she needs to keep Hope a secret, and leaves. Jackson goes after her.

Finn figures Klaus is hiding something, because he killed Ansel despite his desire to know his real father, and also because Klaus "left him [Elijah] to fend for himself, God knows where." He figures Ansel found out what the secret was, so Klaus killed him.

Jackson assures Hayley, and tells her her secrets are his secrets, and her demons are his demons.

In flashback, Marcel turns his comrades into vampires, and they fight off the Germans.

It's sundown, and the vampires leave the compound to go to Marcel's place for his blood bags, and to get Marcel a vial of Klaus' blood to heal him.

Elijah says representational magic must be precise, otherwise the enchantment collapses. He looks up at the stag's head, and lets it sink in that it's all an illusion. He's not noble, but a coward for having lied about Tatia's death. But Klaus forgives him, and tells Finn he misrepresented Klaus too. He is capable of forgiveness, which Finn didn't believe.

Finn brings them back into their own bodies before they can attack him.

Klaus learns from Aiden about the rituals Hayley and Jackson are going through, specifically the rite of divulgement, and goes to stop it.

Trivia[]

  • Antagonist: Finn.
  • Finn creates a spell using Representational Magic to trap Klaus, Elijah and Kol in the astral plane where he can prevent them from harming him and where he can confront them on his own terms. To represent them, Finn uses several animals as analogues to his siblings: Klaus as the "big, bad wolf," Elijah as the "noble stag," Kol as the "wily fox," and himself as the boar; or, as Klaus put it, "the bore."
  • Finn had devised the boundary spell on the compound to break at nightfall during a New Orleans celebration called Carrillon Eve. His intention was that the hungry vampires would then attack the humans, breaking the rule about not feeding on the locals and revealing their existence to the city in hopes that this would be the end of the vampire community in New Orleans.
  • Marcel's past during World War I is shown during which time he took over leadership of his regiment and eventually turned them into his first vampires, which allowed them to survive an attack by the Germans using deadly poison gas.
    • Marcel was enlisted into the 369th Regiment , also known as the Harlem Hell Fighters, or the Brotherhood of the Damned, in New York in 1916 before they were deployed to Séchault, France in the same year. Marcel and the Hell Fighters then fought hard in the trenches until the war finally ended in November 1918.
  • Elijah succeeds in breaking Finn's spell when he reveals that he had killed Tatia to Klaus, something that he had feared confessing since he had learned the truth about Tatia's death from Esther in Red Door.
    • Though Klaus was understandably angry at this revelation, he ends up surprising everyone by forgiving Elijah. Because of these two uncharacteristic confessions, the animal representations of Elijah and Klaus as Finn imagined them were proven to be flawed (as Klaus was shown to be capable of forgiveness, while Elijah was shown to be less noble than he claimed), which ultimately led to Finn breaking the spell before he could risk being hurt in the chambre de chasse by his siblings.
  • Finn later revealed that he had created the spell because he suspected that Klaus and Elijah were keeping a secret, and he assumed that they were working together as a team in order to continue to hide it from him. Determined to discover what it is after his representation spell fails, Finn captures Marcel and his vampires to use his people .
  • Marcel successfully leads his vampires through the celebrations back to his house where they feed on his blood bags. Gia also healed Marcel of his werewolf bite by feeding him some of the blood he was given by Klaus to keep in storage for just such an emergency.
