Go far away and never come back. We are far too damaged to remain together, less a family now than a volatile mix of ingredients. New Orleans will be mine. I will raise my child here in the city you took from me. No doubt, Elijah will choose to stay, but you? Sister, you are free.
Klaus to Rebekah

Farewell to Storyville is the sixteenth episode of the first season of The Originals and the sixteenth episode of the series overall.

Summary[]

TRAPPED IN THE CITY OF THE DEAD — Despite Klaus' rage, Elijah is determined to protect Rebekah while the three of them are trapped in the City of the Dead cemetery by a witch's boundary spell. Klaus and Rebekah trade bitter accusations until Elijah steps in to reveal a long-held secret from the family's past. Meanwhile, Marcel races to free Rebekah, ultimately finding himself forced to make a deal with Genevieve. Finally, Rebekah and Hayley connect over their shared concern for Hayley's unborn baby.

Plot[]

Begins with a 1000+ year flashback. The Mikaelson children are still human. As a storm rages, young Klaus tries to comfort a scared young Rebekah and gives her a carved wooden knight on a horse. He promises to stay with her. Always.

Still stuck in the City of the Dead, Klaus is after Rebekah. Elijah tells Rebekah she has to leave, then he tells Klaus he won't let him hurt their sister.

Knowing she can't get out, Rebekah calls Marcel to tell him she knows Klaus is going to kill her. Marcel tells her he's going to get her out somehow before Klaus finds a way to get to her.

Marcel tries to comfort Davina in the attic. Still upset, she tells him that when she was gone she was in a really dark, cold, place, and it went on forever.

Elijah tries to calm Klaus. With his posturing he reminds Elijah of their Father. This stops Klaus dead in his tracks.

Flashing back to when they were kids, young Elijah tries to teach young Klaus how to hunt with a bow. They're interrupted by Mikael when he finds them in the woods and starts slapping young Klaus around. Young Elijah tries to help his brother, but Mikael warns him to back off as he kicks young Klaus while he's down on the ground.

Elijah tries to get Klaus to prove to him that he's better than their spiteful father Mikael. Rebekah shows herself and tells Klaus that even though she may have done something bad, she did it to get back at him for the horrible things he's done to her.

Back in the French Quarter, Cami visits a tormented Davina. She tells Cami all the ancestors are mad at her because she abused her power. In Father Kieran's church, he admits to Marcel that he lost his faith when Sean killed his fellow seminary students and then killed himself. He criticizes Marcel for his actions and for the Original vampires being there in control. He tells him Klaus will rip him apart, then tells him you reap what you sow.

Returning to the City of the Dead, Klaus sits atop a mausoleum, putting Rebekah on trial. Klaus says he wants to keep Rebekah safe, but Rebekah just wants to know what happened to him after all these years to make him the way he is. Elijah tries to remind him who has really stood by his side all these years.

Flashing back to childhood, Mikael beats young Klaus because he was using one of his knives to carve chess pieces. Elijah and Rebekah come to help and defend him. Rebekah threatens Mikael with a sword. It stops him beating Klaus when he takes the sword away from her and leaves.

Back in the cemetery, Klaus tells her Marcel used her. Rebekah lashes out and Klaus tries to stab her with the White Oak Stake. Elijah takes the stake from Klaus, then tells Rebekah to leave them.

Cami tries to psychoanalyze Davina and tells her she has a choice. Nobody can use her if she doesn't want them to. Davina says she's confused and doesn't know who she can trust. Marcel overhears their conversation and calls Rebekah to let her know Davina won't be able to help her. Rebekah tells him to run.

Flashing back to their childhood again, they're all happy and playing together.

Back in the present, Klaus tells Rebekah that he's convinced she always hated him, but Elijah tells him it's not true. Elijah reveals that when they were younger Rebekah was going to kill Mikael while he slept in order to protect Klaus. Elijah stopped her and took her knife. He said he should have taken the chance and killed Mikael himself.

Klaus tells Elijah to stab him, but Elijah just throws the stake away, refusing to kill him. In return Klaus stabs Elijah with the same demon blade Celeste used to stab him. Now Rebekah has the White Oak stake and says that now she'll decide who will live and who will die.

Klaus and Rebekah stand over the stabbed Elijah. She wants Klaus to remove the blade and tells him he's the one who is to blame for the situation they're in. Klaus reminds her that Marcel is missing in action.

Marcel goes to ask Genevieve to help by removing the boundary spell on the City of the Dead. She tells him that it was because Davina's alliance with him that she suffered. In exchange for her help, she wants Davina.

Back in the cemetery, Klaus and Rebekah continue to argue. Klaus admits to her that he's insane, but he wants her to admit that she really wanted him dead. Finally she does. Then he stabs her with the White Oak stake. Lovingly holding her as he sticks it in.

Klaus is sitting beside her when Rebekah wakes. He says he didn't want to kill her, just wanted her to know how he felt when Mikael came after them back in 1919. They're both crying. Rebekah tells him because of Mikael they're all broken.

Cami watches over Davina as she sleeps. Marcel enters and tells her he's taking Davina to the witches because the witches are the only ones who are able to help her.

Back in the City of the Dead, Klaus removes the dagger from Elijah. Klaus and Rebekah are together waiting for moonrise so they can leave. They have a long discussion. He wonders if their father's father damaged him the way he damaged them. He tells Rebekah to leave and never come back. Klaus and Elijah will remain in New Orleans, but she's free. She's surprised, but leaves. She's finally gotten what she thinks she wants. Klaus looks sad and lost. Perhaps he was hoping that she would ask to stay.

After Rebekah goes to the house that burnt down, Elijah arrives, too. She asks him to leave with her, but he doesn't. She makes an apology to Elijah and tells him she thinks there may actually be some hope for Klaus after all. Rebekah kisses him on his cheek and asks him to help Klaus to find his way.

As Klaus returns home, broken, Marcel is there but Klaus walks past him and walks onward up the stairs. Elijah pays more attention to him, as he throws him up against the wall then tells him he's exiled and can't come back. He tells the other vampires to run along. They all leave, including Marcel. Klaus was watching from the balcony. Nicely done, brother. I'm impressed. You're beginning to sound like me, he says.

When Rebekah goes to Marcel he tells her he doesn't want to run away. He's not ready to leave. She tells him he can have his city. She turns to leave, but Marcel grabs her and kisses her one last time as he cries. She tells him to try and stay alive.

Now that Rebekah is free, she tracks Hayley down in the bayou to let her know she's leaving and to say goodbye. She tells Hayley she thinks there might be some hope for Klaus, but also tells her she should be careful. Then, as she leaves, she tells her that she loves her little future niece very much.

After the traumatic ordeal of the City of the Dead, Klaus sits quietly and looks through a box of keepsakes he still keeps after 1000 years. He seems very sad when he sees the knight on a horse he had carved for Rebekah when they were kids and still human. It's what he was carving with Mikael's knife. As for Rebekah, she drives away in her convertible with a smile on her face. Her life is finally her own.

Cultural References[]

  • "Farewell to Storyville" is a song by Billie Holiday and Louis Armstrong.  The song is about New Orleans and is from the 1947 movie 'New Orleans'.
  • In 1897, the city fathers of New Orleans legalized prostitution in a small quadrant of the city bordering the northwest edge of the French Quarter. As the relevant legislation was written by alderman Sidney Story, the area became known as Storyville. Establishments ranged from squalid "cribs" to regal Victorian-style bordellos. A Louisiana politician named Thomas C. Anderson, known as the "Mayor of Storyville," presided over the district from a cafe named after himself. The photographer E. J. Bellocq immortalized Storyville with his moving and humane portraits of the prostitutes who lived and worked there.
  • Prostitution stayed legal in Storyville until 1917, when the federal government insisted that it be outlawed to protect the morals and delicate sensibilities of the thousands of servicemen flocking to the Crescent City after the United States entered World War I. Today, the bordellos are long gone, replaced by a collection of housing projects and part of Louis Armstrong Park. But during that twenty years, Storyville not only became a part of New Orleans lore, it functioned as a hothouse for the development of jazz.
  • City of the Dead is the name often used to refer to the above-ground tombs in the cemeteries of New Orleans.
  • "Farewell To Storyville" is a song by New Orleans born Folk/Jazz singer Paul Sanchez from the 2009 Album of the same name. He writes about the life of the city over its long history.

Quotes[]

Mikael (to Rebekah): "You stand against me? For him?"
Young Rebekah: "Will you stay with me until the storm ends?"
Young Klaus: "I will always stay with you, Rebekah. No matter what."

Elijah: "We've been at this for hours-- to what end? Niklaus, I know you. and I grew up fighting you. I can't be beaten, nor can I be persuaded. You cannot get past me."
Klaus: "I could get past you, although it might have to be over your dead body. You did stab me with that blade, forcing me to endure hours of unspeakable pain. Perhaps I should direct my rage at you?"
Elijah: "You should see yourself! The murderous expression, the self-righteous posturing-- you look like Father."

Marcel: "Do whatever it takes. Just stay alive. I promise I'll get you out of there."
Rebekah: "I've never seen him like this before. He's out of his mind with rage, up all night howling one obscenity laced tirade after the next. He's gonna kill me."
Marcel: "Alright, stay as far away from him as possible."
Rebekah: "That's a brilliant strategy but given that dead bitch Celeste has trapped us in here 'til moonrise, my options are somewhat limited."
Marcel: "I'm not leaving you in there. Davina will find a loophole, get you out early, and then we can all go together. If Klaus comes after us, we will take him on one hell of a ride."
Rebekah: "I lived for centuries looking over my shoulder, ready to run at a moment's notice. Am I to go back to that?"
Marcel: "Worry about that later. Right now, just buy me some time. I promise you I'll get you out of there."

Klaus: "Let it begin! The trial of Rebekah Mikaelson!"
Rebekah: (to Elijah) "What a relief. His ego is in check."

Rebekah (to Klaus): "I called Mikael. I was the one who brought him to New Orleans, because of your wickedness. I wanted love and happiness, and you denied me the freedom to have either. My bastard brother who loomed over me, threatening me as you are now.

Klaus: "I know I can be difficult, but I did not make myself this way. It was Mikael who ruined me."
Rebekah: "He ruined me too. That's what you forget. Centuries later, each of us is broken. You with your anger and paranoia. Me with my fear of abandonment. And poor Elijah-- he dedicates himself to everyone but himself. We are the strongest creatures in the world, and yet we are damaged beyond repair. We live without hope, but we will never die. We are the definition of "cursed." Always and forever."
