This love triangle was between the powerful witch Qetsiyah, the former Immortal-turned-witch Silas, and the former Immortal Anchor-turned-human Amara. This is the oldest love triangle in the series.
History[]
2,000 years ago in Ancient Greece, a man named Silas and a woman named Qetsiyah, were the two most powerful members of a group of gifted people called Travelers and engaged to be married. However, Silas faked being in love with her so that she would create an elixir for immortality. Silas was in love with another woman and left Qetsiyah at the altar. He gave the immortality meant for Qetsiyah to Qetsiyah's handmaiden, named Amara. When they drank the elixir, they violated the natural law that all living things must die, so nature found a balance by creating shadow selves, versions of Silas and Amara that could die. When Qetsiyah found out, she created a cure for immortality, found Amara, gave her the cure and then killed her. She then gave Silas a second chance to take the cure and give up his immortality so they could live long human lives together. Qetsiyah then created a supernatural limbo to trap his soul to act as a supernatural barrier between Silas and the afterlife Amara. Qetsiyah trapping him in a tomb with the cure, with two choices to either take the cure and pass to the Other Side or rot in a tomb. Silas refused to give Qetsiyah the satisfaction of passing to the Other Side. Over the next 2,000 years, consuming dribbles of blood from thousands of people has allowed Silas to hone his mental powers and eventually he would find someone willing to help him rise again. When Atticus Shane came to the island where he was entombed, Silas used visions of Shane's dead wife, Caitlin, to manipulate him in order to free him from his imprisonment.

Silas in Ancient Greece
Silas (Ancient Greek: Σίλας or Σιλβανυσς, Roman or Latin: Esīelāes or Esīelūāenes) was born some time in the 1st century B.C and his origins are from Ancient Greece. Silas is the world's very first immortal being and the world's first immortal man. He is the earliest known ancestor of the Salvatore family bloodline. He is the progenitor of the Salvatore doppelgänger bloodline and is also a very distant ancestor of the Salvatore family. Before becoming an immortal, he was a very gifted and powerful witch. Silas was deeply and passionately in love with his true love and soulmate; a young lady named Amara (who is the original the progenitor of the Petrova doppelgänger bloodline). Silas' love for Amara was so strong that his love for her was the major motivator behind him wanting to create the very first spell of immortality with the help of his best friend, who was also a powerful witch and also madly in love with Silas, Qetsiyah (who is also known as the oldest ancestor of the Bennett bloodline). In order for Silas to get help to create the spell, Silas manipulated and convinced Qetsiyah that he loved her and wanted to spend an eternity with her.
Out of love for Silas, she created the spell of immortality. The spell was to be consumed on Silas and Qetsiyah's wedding night. However, Silas did not intend to give immortality to Qetsiyah and wanted to give immortality to Amara instead so that Silas and Amara could spend eternity together. On Silas and Qetsiyah's wedding night, Silas stole the immortality elixir and made himself and Amara the world's first immortal beings. After Qetsiyah discovered that Silas had granted the gift of immortality to his true love Amara and not her, she cured Amara of her immortality and then brutally killed her out of jealous rage by slitting her throat and cutting out her heart. Silas was completely and utterly devastated. Qetsiyah then lured Silas to an isolated island and entombed him in darkness, leaving him to starve and desiccate for eternity. Buried with Silas was the cure for immortality, in which Qetsiyah created. Silas had two choices: either take the cure, die a mortal death and be on The Other Side, which is a purgatory meant for dead supernatural beings, with her for eternity or stay entombed in darkness and desiccate forever.
Out of spite, anger and vengeance towards Qetsiyah murdering Amara, Silas chose to not take the cure and ended up staying entombed in darkness and starving for over 2,000 years. Because Silas refused to take the cure and die out of spite, Qetsiyah ended up creating the Other Side in order to trap Silas should he take the cure and die. Creating the Other Side would prevent Silas from finding eternal peace and being together in death with Amara on the earth's metaphysical plane, which is where human souls go after they die. Qetsiyah also created The Five, a group of supernatural hunters whose main goal and mission was to find Silas, cure him of his immortality and kill him, so that Silas would end up on the Other Side with Qetsiyah instead of with Amara as she wanted. After over 2,000 years of being entombed in darkness, Silas has risen and plans on wreaking havoc everywhere he goes. He is determined to join his true love Amara in death by getting Bonnie, who is a very distant descendant of Qetsiyah , to drop the veil so that he could take the cure and die a mortal death and cross over to be with Amara. It was revealed after 2,000 years that Qetsiyah had lied to Silas about Amara and had faked her death. Qetsiyah had actually desiccated and entombed Amara and then used her as the physical anchor for the Other Side spell in which Qetsiyah had created in order to trap Silas' soul shall Silas die a mortal death.
Amara is reawakened after over two millenniums, only to have suffered extreme emotional, psychological and mental torture for over 2,000 years due to experiencing and feeling every single supernatural death and seeing endless supernatural beings on top of desiccating and starving at the same time. Silas reunites with Amara. Amara tells Silas that she loves him and that she is sorry. She then stabs Silas in the neck in order to obtain the cure for immortality which is running through Silas' veins. Amara then tells Silas that she cannot live for another day and that seeks death immediately to end her 2,000 year old suffering and torture. Silas still intends on destroying the Other Side so that he could be with Amara in peace in true eternal death. Silas and Amara reunite once more and Amara begs Silas to kill her so that her suffering can end for good and she can find peace. Amara tells Silas that she loves him and that she will always love him but that she cannot live for another day and wants to end her suffering. Silas tells Amara that he understands. Amara stabs herself and dies, crossing over to the metaphysical plane where humans go to after they die. Afterwards, Silas is stabbed by Stefan, his doppelgänger and descendant, and he dies. Unfortunately, Silas dies before he ever had a chance to destroy the Other Side. Silas ends up crossing over to the Other Side, which means that he is separated from Amara forever.
To make matters worse and more tragic, Qetsiyah ends up killing herself after transferring the anchor from Amara to Bonnie. Qetsiyah crosses over to the Other Side, where Silas is stuck with her for all eternity. This means that Qetsiyah got her 2,000 year old wish; Silas being stuck with her on the Other Side and being separated from his soulmate for all time and for all eternity. When Silas made himself truly immortal, he created an imbalance in nature and nature needed a loophole, a version or versions of Silas that could die. Therefore, shadow selves, doppelgängers or a doppelgänger bloodline of Silas was created in order to maintain the balance of nature. Silas is known as the Original Salvatore and he is the progenitor of the Salvatore doppelgänger bloodline, which spawned at least three unknown Salvatore doppelgängers, Tom Avery, and Stefan Salvatore. He is also a very distant and ancient ancestor of all of the Salvatore men, including the three unnamed Salvatore doppelgängers, Giuseppe, Zachariah, Joseph, Stefan, Damon, Zach, and Tom.

Amara (Ancient Greek: Αμάρα) was born some time in the 1st century B.C. Her origins are from Ancient Greece. She is the earliest known ancestor of the Petrova family bloodline. Amara was the very first immortal woman in the world. She was also the true love of the world's very first immortal man, Silas. Back during 1st century B.C., Amara fell deeply in love with a young, gifted and powerful witch named Silas. Although Amara and Silas loved each other, their love was highly forbidden as Amara was the handmaiden to a powerful witch, Qetsiyah and Silas was engaged to be married to Qetsiyah, who was also in love with Silas. Silas' love for Amara was so powerful that it motivated him to wanting to live for eternity with her. However, in order to get help in order to create the spell of immortality, Silas told Qetsiyah that he wanted to spend forever with her but secretly, he intended to spend it with Amara. Believing that Silas wanted to be with her forever, Qetsiyah created the very first immortality spell out of love for Silas. Qetsiyah had made the immortality spell for she and Silas to consume on their wedding night. However, everything turned awry for Qetsiyah when she realized Silas had stolen the immortality elixir and had betrayed and abandoned her on their wedding night. Silas had made himself and Amara the first immortal beings.
Enraged by Silas' betrayal, she tracked him down, and discovered he had given her immortality elixir to her own handmaiden, Amara. Qetsiyah then created two doses of the cure for immortality as a "gift" for Silas and Amara. She cured Amara of her immortality and then killed her by slitting her throat and cutting her heart out. Silas found out what Qetsiyah had done and he was completely devastated. After Amara was killed, Qetsiyah lured Silas to an isolated island and entombed him in darkness, burying him with the second dose of the cure for immortality, hoping that Silas would take the cure, die a mortal death and cross over to The Other Side, which is a purgatory meant for supernatural beings after they die. Qetsiyah's motivation behind creating the Other Side was to prevent Silas from ever reuniting with Amara in true death on the earth's metaphysical plane, which is the place where human souls go after they die. Therefore, Amara has been on the metaphysical plane alone and unable to be reunited with Silas, her true love, in death. However, this was from both the legend of Silas and from Qetsiyah's point of view and was not wholly the truth of what happened. It was revealed that Qetsiyah in fact did not kill Amara, but instead, desiccated and entombed her body.
It was also revealed that Qetsiyah used Amara as the physical anchor for The Other Side, as Qetsiyah needed an anchor that was both eternal and indestructible, hence Amara, who was an immortal being and could not die or be killed. Amara, as a result, ended up being trapped in her own body for over 2,000+ years, suffering without her true love Silas, plus seeing endless dead supernatural beings due to being bound as an anchor for The Other Side. As a result or price of being the anchor for such a place, it is clear that Amara has suffered serious emotional, mental and psychological trauma over the many centuries; she had suffered a similar fate to that of Silas, whom Qetsiyah had entombed on a desolate island in darkness to starve and desiccate for eternity. Amara has reunited with Silas for the first time in over two millenniums but she is extremely petrified and overwhelmed. Amara consumes the cure for immortality via drinking Silas' blood, which contains the cure. Amara tells Silas that she deeply loves him but that she cannot live for another day, that she desires to die and be at peace more than anything else due to the endless suffering she endured for centuries and centuries. Amara decides to kill herself by stabbing herself. Before she dies, Amara tells Silas that she loves him and that she will always love him, but that she cannot live anymore.
Amara dies and crosses over to the Earth's metaphysical plane, where dead human souls go to after they die. Tessa transfers the anchor from Amara to her descendant Bonnie, with Bonnie taking Amara's place of being the anchor to The Other Side. Silas is stabbed and killed by Stefan, his doppelgänger and descendant and he ends up crossing over to The Other Side. Tessa then kills herself by cutting herself. Tessa dies after extreme blood lost and crosses over to the Other Side, where she claims that Silas is "awaiting her on The Other Side". This means that Tessa accomplished her 2,000+ year old goal; to separate the two fates, the soulmates and the star crossed lovers for eternity. This means that Amara has to spend an eternity alone on the metaphysical plane without her one true love, Silas, for eternity, while Silas suffers the same fate as Amara on The Other Side. When Amara became a truly immortal being, nature immediately had to restore the balance, meaning nature needed a version or mortal versions of Amara that could die. Thus, shadow selves, doppelgängers or a doppelgänger bloodline of Amara was created as a way to restore the balance. Amara is recently known as the Original Petrova and is known as the progenitor of the Petrova doppelgänger bloodline. She is also the earliest known ancestor of Tatia, Katherine and Elena, all of whom are doppelgängers of her. Amara is also an ancestor to all of the Petrova women.

Qetsiyah (Ancient Greek: Θετσιυαη), known as Tessa in the modern times, was born some time in the 1st century B.C. She is the oldest known ancestor of the Bennett bloodline. She was the most powerful witch in history. She created the first spell of immortality, the cure, and The Other Side. Over 2,000 years ago in Ancient Greece, Qetsiyah fell deeply in love with a young, gifted, powerful witch named Silas (who is the oldest ancestor of the Salvatore family and bloodline). Qetsiyah and Silas belonged to a group of very gifted people called The Travelers. Qetsiyah eventually became engaged to be married to Silas. Silas had a desire to be an immortal and live forever. Silas told Qetsiyah that he wanted to live forever with her. Out of love for Silas, Qetsiyah created the spell of immortality. However, Silas' intention was not to spend an eternity with Qestiyah, but to spend it with his true love, Amara (who is the oldest known ancestor of the Petrova family and bloodline). Qetsiyah had made the spell for immortality for she and Silas to consume on their wedding night. As Qetsiyah was expecting Silas to meet her at the altar so that they could begin to spend eternity together, things started to go awry for Qestiyah. She noticed that everything around her, including her own wedding flower, had started to die. This made it blatantly obvious that Silas had betrayed Qetsiyah. Qetsiyah had seen that Silas had stolen the immortality elixir for himself. However, what Qetsiyah didn't know was whom Silas stole the immortality elixir for other than himself.
Feeling betrayed, Qetsiyah tracked Silas down. She discovered Silas with her handmaiden, Amara. It was then that Qetsiyah realized that Silas' true love was Amara and that Silas had betrayed Qetsiyah and stole the spell for immortality and made himself and Amara the first immortal beings in the world. Feeling extremely enraged, jealous and angered, Qetsiyah created a cure for immortality; one for Amara and one for Silas. Qetsiyah confronted Amara, desiccated her, entombed her and faked her death to make Silas believe she was dead. When Silas confronted Qetsiyah about what she was doing, Qetsiyah lied to Silas by saying that she created two cures for immortality, and that she cured Amara. Silas asked Qetsiyah what she had done. Silas walked into his and Amara's hideout and found the place soaked in blood, as if someone had been slaughtered there. Not knowing about the truth of what Qetsiyah had done to Amara, Silas was extremely and utterly devastated when he thought that Qetsiyah had killed Amara by slitting her throat and cutting out her heart. Silas got extremely angered and enraged and said that he was going to kill Qetsiyah.
However, Qetsiyah ended up neutralizing Silas with her powers. She then coerced Silas to take the cure so that he would be cured of his immortality and that she and Silas would live "long, mortal lives together." When Silas refused to take the cure out of anger and spite against Qetsiyah, Qetsiyah lured Silas to a desolate and remote island and entombed him in darkness for eternity, being left to starve and desiccate. Qetsiyah buried and entombed Silas with the one and only cure for immortality that she created; she gave Silas two choices: either take the cure, die a mortal death and cross over to be with her for eternity on The Other Side, which is a purgatory for dead supernatural beings (i.e. witches, vampires, werewolves, doppelgängers, etc) to go to after they die and a place which she created in order to trap Silas' souls shall he die a mortal death and cross over, OR not take the cure, starve and desiccate in darkness for all of eternity.
To spite Qetsiyah, Silas chose to starve and desiccate for eternity and lain buried for over 2,000+ years. After desiccating Amara, Qetsiyah used Amara as a physical anchor for the creation of The Other Side spell. Qetsiyah needed an anchor which would be both eternal and indestructible, hence using Amara, who is an immortal being, to bind The Other Side in her spell. As a result, Amara ended up being trapped in her body for over 2,000 years and eventually became very mentally unstable, crazy and psychologically, mentally and emotionally deranged and damaged. Many centuries passed and Silas still refused to take the cure so he could die and cross over to The Other Side. Qetsiyah then created The Five, which is a group of supernatural hunters whose main and primary goal is to find Silas, cure him and then kill him. Qetsiyah's hunters were unsuccessful in their mission as all of them were killed by Klaus during the 12th century. In the present day, Qetsiyah has recently brought herself back to life as Bonnie had dropped the veil at the end of season four. Qetsiyah plans on completing her plan of 2,000 years: to cure Silas and kill him so that he can be with her for eternity on The Other Side and separated from his true love, Amara, forever.
After 2,000 years, Qetsiyah has finally gotten her wish. Amara has died and crossed over to the metaphysical plane, the place where dead human souls go to after they die. Silas, on the other hand, is stabbed by his doppelgänger and descendant Stefan and dies, resulting in Silas crossing over to The Other Side, where he is stuck with Qetsiyah, the woman he never loved, for eternity. This means that after 2,000 years, Qetsiyah finally succeeded in separating the "two fates" from ever finding eternal peace together in true death and has separated the pair of star-crossed lovers for all time and for all eternity. Qetsiyah is a very distant ancestor to all of the Bennett women, including Ayana, Emily, Sheila, Abby, Bonnie, etc. and is the oldest and most ancient ancestor of the Bennett bloodline.

Season Five[]
During this season, Silas returned in the finale and it was shown that Qetisiyah was right. Although they were "Soulmates," Qetsiyah made sure that Amara and Silas would never see each other again. Qetsiyah made sure Silas stayed on the Other Side with her forever, while being eternally separated from Amara. Since Amara was a human, she automatically moved on and found peace on the ethereal plane. However, since the Other Side began to collapse, Silas was sucked into oblivion whereas Qetsiyah may or may not have found peace from the Other Side. After the Other Side collapsed, this love triangle is separated for good after nearly 2,000 years.
