All your family has endured, and yet the worst is still to come. An unending darkness lies before you, A lone figure ... a pale horse, a flame that will burn you all.
Ariane to Elijah

Wild at Heart is the eleventh episode of the third season of The Originals and the fifty-fifth episode of the series overall.

Summary[]

A STORM IS COMING — While Klaus finds himself dealing with pressing matters at home, Elijah reluctantly aligns with Aya after learning that she may have knowledge of an elusive weapon that could kill an Original Vampire for good. Meanwhile, alone and shunned by her coven of witches, a desperate Davina is left conflicted after she is approached with an enticing offer that could bring her one step closer to reuniting with Kol. Hayley, Marcel and Cami also appear.

Plot[]

With the loss of their leader, Aya had asked her witch Ariane to conduct an assessment earlier that evening. She wants to know which of her people is loyal and treacherous. Ariane tells the vampires that a card lies before them, a divination of their truest self. If their intentions are pure, they shouldn't fear what it shows. Marcel becomes uneasy. All of them get The Knight of Pentacles, except one Strix vampire, who got The Hanged Man. He wanted to use their present situation as an opportunity for a power grab. Aya kills him immediately, and turns to Marcel. He flips the card over slowly, and sighs with relief as he sees The Knight of Pentacles.

Despite what Elijah would have them believe, Aya continues saying, the prophecy of his demise is real. She will use whatever means necessary to ensure the sireline's survival.

Later in the day, Davina is at the market. She asks for Angelica flower, but the witch ignores her. Hurt, she turns to leave, but Josh intercedes and asks for the complaint hotline. Davina takes him away, and they walk down the street together.

Klaus finds Camille gone, and Elijah reminds him that it was Klaus who gave her a daylight ring. Hayley tells them Camille left at sunrise, and asks if she and Hope could stay in the compound. Klaus tells her that she'll always have a home with them.

Elijah gets a call from Aya, who suggests they pool their efforts in finding the threat that could kill an Original. Alexis left her clues in a rather cryptic puzzle, and Aya has the means to put it together.

Davina apologizes for not answering Josh's calls, but Josh reminds her that she has friends to help her not go through the terrible parts alone. Aya's limo pulls up, and Davina gets in, promising to call Josh later.

At the bar, a guy asks for tequila shots and makes an inappropriate remark to the bartender. Camille tells him the girl works hard, and compels him to find the nearest ATM and max out on his daily limit to give the bartender the biggest tip she's ever seen. The bartender hands a few drinks to Camille, and says a guy on the other side was insistent. Camille sees Klaus, who waves at her.

Aya introduces Davina to The Sisters, the Strix's personal coven of powerful witches who were once orphaned and outcasts. She compares the Nine Covens to a burning candle, whereas The Sisters are a five-alarm fire. Handing Davina a spell to raise the dead, Aya says she'll grant Davina the power to bring back Kol in exchange for becoming a Sister.

In the attic of St. Anne's Church, Davina tells Josh she'll perform a simple suspension spell, which will stop her from dying when the poison stops her heart. The witches of the Nine Covens won't even look at her, so she has to see Kol to ask him if the Strix's spell is real. Josh is uncertain and refuses to help Davina for her own good, but Davina has already taken the poison. As a link to the living, Davina cuts both of their palms and holds hands, telling him to never let go no matter what.

Aya introduces Elijah to Ariane. Using water as a conductor, she goes into his mind to see and understand everything he's learned in a thousand years. Aya asks if she saw the weapon, but Ariane's words are vague. A lone figure, a pale horse … a flame that will burn them all.

Davina wanders through the streets of the French Quarter in Purgatory, when Kol suddenly pulls her into an alley, but their initial reunion is short-lived. He takes her to a pub, as the Ancestors don't go there. He kisses her, but she's still unsettled, so he dances with her, telling her to close her eyes and remember the last time they were together.

Camille snaps Klaus' neck and "accidentally" bumps into Will Kinney. She compels him to enter Lucien's penthouse to gather all the dark objects from her uncle. He asks why she's doing this, and she explains that she's the victim of someone else's story one too many times and she wants back what's hers, having the power to take it now as a vampire. Klaus arrives, surprised at her willingness to compel after all her protestations of free will. He praises her for learning fast, but tells her not to push it.

Davina gives Kol the spell to raise him from the dead, but he says it's a fake. She knows he's lying and asks why. He tells her the spell is dangerous, that he hasn't seen anything like it since the Strix. He realizes that she got it from them, and tells her to find another way, that nothing is worth what the Strix will make her do. The Ancestors come inside, and they hide under the bar until they leave.

Camille realizes that this is what Aurora wanted—to take away her humanity, the one thing she had advantage of over Aurora. But it isn't the darkness that's turned Klaus against Camille, instead he finds it intriguing. It's the fact that Klaus no longer controls her. Hayley walks in and tells Klaus he can't force her to stay. Elijah needs a word with Klaus, and Hayley and Camille have a talk.

Camille tells Hayley she should just admit it's not grief she's feeling, but relief. Jackson is dead, and she's in love with Elijah. Hayley ignores that, but warns Camille that she's never to talk about Jackson ever again. Camille apologizes, asking why she said all those things, and says she'll go home. (In a flashback later on in the episode, Camille wasn't simply tuning out of Hayley's voice, but listening in on Klaus and Elijah.)

Hayley tells Klaus she let Camille go, that the person he knew is gone and she needs to figure out who she is by herself. He says he just wanted to keep her safe, but Hayley says he does more harm than good to those he loves. Klaus realizes the threat, the "Pale Horse," is a sculpture he gave to Rebekah as a child. Elijah says he collected the firewood himself, and makes the discovery on his own: it was made of the White Oak.

Ariane makes Josh bleed from his throat and he falls unconscious, while Davina and Kol get attacked by Kara Nguyen. Ariane stops Kara, and they get away. Inside St. Anne's, Kol stalls the Ancestors, but not for long. With the link broken, Ariane tells Davina to focus about her reason for living, to resurrect herself.

Hayley says the horse carving was among Hope's toys that afternoon, and Klaus knows there's only one other person capable of deciphering the witch's riddle—Camille. He had spoken to her, in the past, about making the toy for Rebekah.

Klaus readily makes the deal to exchange Camille's belongings in exchange for the horse carving.

Ariane is by the pool of water, when Elijah walks in. She knows they've found the weapon, that he's there to kill her to stop this information from reaching Aya's ears. But instead of having fear, she is relieved, as this means she's free from the Strix. Elijah bites and feeds from her, then throws her body in the pool.

Josh tells Marcel that Davina is now one of the Strix's witches.

Hayley sobs on the floor of her apartment, grieving Jackson.

Trivia[]

  • Antagonists: The Ancestors and Camille O'Connell.
  • This episode marks the 100th appearance of Niklaus Mikaelson in the TVD universe.
  • This episode marks the 200th episode of TVD Universe as a whole.
  • This episode marks Nathaniel Buzolic's first modern day appearance as Kol Mikaelson in The Originals.
  • This episode marks the first time Davina interacts with Kol in his real body.
  • This episode marks the first time we see Purgatory, despite it being talked about during previous seasons. This parallels The Vampire Diaries, with The Other Side also appearing in it's third season.
  • This episode marks Ariane's first appearance.
  • This episode is the first to feature Camille O'Connell as a vampire since she completed her transition in the previous episode; it can be seen that Cami is very great in mind controlling, even though she was newly turned.
  • Cami now realizes why Aurora turned her into a vampire instead of just simply killing her. She wanted to take away the one advantage Cami had over her, her humanity in relation to Klaus' relationship with her.
    • She is struggling to control her darker persona upon being a vampire, losing her tact when she confronted Hayley about Jackson's death.
  • Freya Mikaelson is the one who made Cami's daylight ring.
  • Aya recruits Davina into the Sisters, a coven of witches who serve the Strix formed by wayward witches who had been outcasted of their covens or families. Aya promises that the Sisters will help Davina raise Kol from the dead, as they possess the spell and the power to do so.
  • This episode revealed the elusive weapon to kill the Originals. The wooden knight figurine Klaus made for Rebekah, as seen in Farewell to Storyville, and now one of Hope's toys, is made from wood of the White Oak Tree before they were turned.
  • Cami stole the wooden knight figurine as leverage to get back the Dark Objects she retrieved from Lucien's apartment with the help of a compelled Detective Kinney as she couldn't enter herself, being a part of Rebekah's sire line. She tells Klaus he can get it back in exchange for the Dark Objects he took from her.
  • Klaus gets his neck broken by a vampire for the first time on screen, previous incidents were done by Witches.

Behind the Scenes[]

  • We shot a scene that didn't make the final cut in which Klaus "trains" Cami, Karate Kid-style, by throwing things at her (her goal being to use her newly acquired "vamp speed" to catch them). What we learned is that A) Leah doesn't love having things thrown at her head, go figure (although she was a great sport), and B) Joe has quite the arm… but his aim could use a little work; he almost hit us writers during rehearsal. Although in retrospect, maybe that wasn't an accident?
  • Everyone will tell you the first rules of filmmaking: no animals and no babies. This is because you can't reason with them (no matter how hard you try). Blake and Charlie, who play baby Hope, are lovely, adorable, sweet kids… who have a tendency to cry their way through 95 percent of their scenes. So Bart and I thought we'd be really clever, and write a scene in which Hope is supposed to cry, sensing her mother's sadness and distress at Jackson's death. Hahaha, silly us. We thought we could outsmart a baby. Spoiler alert: The babies wouldn't cry. And since we're not monsters, we didn't try to upset them, but instead rewrote the scene
  • It rained while we were shooting Davina and Josh's scenes in the witch marketplace. Usually we HATE rain when we're shooting exteriors… unless said location is filled with bees, and the rain chases away the bees. The witch market was filled with bees. Yay, rain.
  • One of our favorite parts of this job is all the people we get to work with — our amazing cast, our badass crew — but sometimes it's one step beyond, and we actually get to fanboy/fangirl out a little over our coworkers. Bart and [executive producer Michael] Narducci were already huge fans of our director, John Hyams, based on his previous work — his documentary The Smashing Machine and his installments of the Universal Soldier franchise, respectively — and were geeks about it. (I quickly become a big fan too once I saw his work and also realized he's smart and funny and has great Jean-Claude Van Damme stories.) My biggest fangirl moment was getting to work, for the first time this season, with Jason Dohring, a.k.a. Det. Kinney, a.k.a. Logan Echolls from Veronica Mars (one of my absolute favorite characters in one of my favorites series of all time). Luckily, I think I successfully hid my excitement and didn't totally freak him out. And I'm sure admitting this in a national publication won't make things weird at all.
