Director: Ross Clarke Premiere type: World Running time: 93min Country: UK, USA Year: 2014
East End filmmaker Ross Clarke (Skid Row, EEFF 2010) heads West to America to make his stylish, atmospheric feature debut with Dermaphoria.
A fragmented, involving plunge into a fractured psyche, Clarke's film sees Eric Ashworth (Joseph Morgan, The Vampire Diaries) wake up in jail, accused of arson and incapable of piecing together the reasons for his being there. Recalling the mysterious, evocative name of Desiree (played by rising star Nicole Badaan), his past misdemeanours remain a mystery until, holed up in a low-rent motel, he discovers a strange new hallucinogen that allows him to recover his memories. Demystifying his clouded past, his former life as an illegal chemist becomes clearer; but as his tolerance for the drug increases, the world around him becomes more and more interchangeable with his imagination.
Also starring Ron Perlman (Hellboy), Walton Goggins (The Shield, Sons of Anarchy) and Kate Walsh (Grey's Anatomy), Clarke's debut film is a phenomenally realised, hallucinatory experience. Ron Perlman
Making atmospheric use of its New Orleans setting, Dermaphoria alternately recalls Angel Heart, Memento and 2013′s Upstream Colour. It represents the arrival of a truly talented, distinctive filmmaker, an artistic 'coming of age' that couldn't be a better fit for the East End Film Festival in its 13th year.
