Nostalgia's a Bitch is the tenth episode of the eighth season of The Vampire Diaries and the one hundred and sixty-fifth episode of the series overall.
Summary[]
THE RINGING OF THE BELL – Sybil enacts revenge on Damon by putting him in a catatonic state. Caroline and Bonnie enter Damon's mind and run into familiar faces from the past, only to discover Stefan is the key to Damon's fate. It's a race against time for the bell as both Sybil and her sister Seline jockey for its control. Matt also appears.
Plot[]
Damon's just sitting at his house and not talking with anyone. Caroline enters his mind and says that she only sees fire and pain. She and Bonnie go down to the visit Sybil in the cellar. Sybil asks for an exchange: she'll fix Damon if they give her the bell.
At Mystic Grill, Violet is killing people when Stefan showed up. She blames him for turning her, and he kills her which sends her corrupt soul to Cade. Matt is at the crime scene when Caroline asks him to bring the bell to Sybil. Sybil realizes that Damon convinced himself that he's in hell because he feels guilty. She offers to take Caroline and Bonnie to his subconscious.
In his subconscious, Salvatore Boarding House is a hotel and they meet the receptionist Henry Wattles, whose life Damon saved in the Civil War. They question him about Damon and he asks them to leave. Back in the present, Sybil tells them that she can't do anything. Stefan tells them that whenever Damon felt guilty as a child, he would hide and would go back to normal only after somebody'd told him that everything would be okay. He advises them to do the same.
Bonnie and Caroline go to his subconscious again. At Mystic Grill they see Vicki Donovan with a bandage on her neck working as a waitress. After her shift is over, they decide to follow her , but Caroline sees her mom and stays while Bonnie talks to Vicki. Bonnie asks her to remove the bandage thinking there are bite marks from Damon, but turns out it's just a hickey. Inside, Caroline talks with her mom and she concludes that Caroline's a vampire and takes her to a cell to torture her just like her father did in real life. Her mom is convinced that she's behind the "animal attacks". Caroline tells her how Damon was her friend and how she died of cancer. Caroline wakes up. Meanwhile, Bonnie is still in and and visits her Grams to ask her to do a locator spell to find Damon. She goes to his family crypt and finds Tyler and soo realizes that Damon doesn't need Caroline or Bonnie's forgiveness, but Stefan's.
In the present, Peter and Matt meet up at Vicki's grave. He tells his father that the person who turned Vicki is currently suffering and that the bell could save him. Peter tells him that he wants the person to suffer. Matt meets with Seline who tells him that once his father assembles the bell, he or his father need to ring it 12 times. That will open a portal to Hell, bring hellfire to town and kill everyone. Stefan compels Matt to ring the bell.
Then Stefan enters Damon's subconscious and says that he forgives him. Damon replies that Stefan actually needs his forgiveness and he gives it to him. Stefan's sure that he doesn't need his forgiveness.
Meanwhile, Matt says to his father that he has to punch him and kill him to prevent him from ringing the bell and killing the whole town. They start arguing. He starts ringing the bell and Sybil realizes that Seline has the bell. At that moment, Damon wakes up and escapes. Just as Matt is about to ring the bell for the 12th time with his father trying to stop him, Damon comes behind them and knocks him down. He sends the bell away with Peter and apologizes to Matt for Vicki, which he accepts.
Stefan wakes up chained in the cellar. Caroline tells him that she's continue trying to bring him back. Damon meets up with Bonnie who tells him that everything he'd done under Sybil's control isn't his fault.
Sybil and Seline meet at the diner. They are soon joined by Cade, who reveals that while 11 rings weren't enough to unleash the hellfire, it was enough to summon him. He sets them on fire and tells that he'll take it from here.
