“ | There was a time when the name Klaus Mikaelson was little more than a rumor. A shadowy figure who cast fear into the very bones of any who heard whisper of him. I don't run, sister. I disappear. And tonight, the three of you are going to make that possible. | ” |

An Old Friend Calls is the fifteenth episode of the third season of The Originals and the fifty-ninth episode of the series overall.
Summary[]
THE ARRIVAL OF A NEW FOE — When Klaus learns that Cortez, an old vampire with a vendetta against him, has arrived in New Orleans, he finds himself forced to deal with this new threat. Meanwhile, when Cortez begins threatening the lives of innocent residents, Vincent has no choice but to help the vengeful vampire in his plan to take down Klaus. Elsewhere, Marcel turns to Davina for her help after several Strix members turn up missing, and Elijah confronts Hayley after learning that she's been dealing with Jackson's death in a destructive way. Cami and Freya also appear.
Plot[]
Klaus opens a safe and takes out a box. He and Elijah explain to Freya they went through a phase of keeping letters of their victims' loved ones, a phase in which they were forced to learn a different kind of stealth. Klaus' enemies had become so numerous, they had to withdraw from the world. They hadn't made their presence in New Orleans discreet. Klaus says they all saw the White Oak destroyed, and all the vampires had no choice but to protect him. Now the advantage is gone, and his enemies will come for him like never before. Freya thinks it's his paranoia acting up, but Klaus says it's with good reason. Elijah tells him Klaus destroyed every last splinter, but Klaus says it would be madness to believe that. Elijah suggests he should see a therapist.
Camille is at the gym with Vincent. She's upset Klaus didn't kill her, as that means Aurora can come back and perhaps most likely kill her. Klaus comes in, and asks to see Camille to talk, in a more appropriate professional boundary.
Kol wakes up. It's been three days since he regenerated from ash. Davina is dismayed that Kol didn't come back as a witch, but as an Original the way he died, but Kol promises her he can control his bloodthirst. They kiss for the first time in his original body. Kol says he needs a daylight ring, a family reunion is in order. But Davina tells him Klaus might want to kill her.
Marcel wakes up Josh from a party he and the other vampires had, which Marcel hadn't known about. He tells Josh it wasn't a party at the Strix headquarters, but Josh wonders how long they have to care about the Strix. Two Strix members enter and say their plans on leaving New Orleans is on hold, because three members of the upper circle are missing.
Hayley has a paper with a list of names, including Fakuda, Baley and Finn—the same people missing from the Strix. She crumples up the paper when Elijah walks in. As she heads out, Elijah will look after Hope.
Camille and Klaus talk. He despises feeling helpless. A few decades earlier, Mikael disappeared without a trace, not even a locator spell could show where he was. Klaus lived as though Mikael lurked around every corner until he cut off all associations and disappeared too. He told Elijah that he'd dumped their siblings in the ocean, which estranged them. He has more to lose now. Camille says she can't be his therapist anymore, ‘cause she has issues of her, brought on by the fact Aurora is still alive. Klaus walks in the street alone, and he momentarily sees an old enemy, Gaspar Cortez.
He tells Freya that Gaspar was the youngest son of a vile family of warlords in the 17th century. Elijah calls the place the warlords burned down a "Philistine pigsty," but Klaus gets offended, as Belaga was his favorite artist's retreat. So Klaus murdered Gaspar's father and five of his siblings. He was a footnote until Gaspar became a vampire hellbent on hunting Klaus.
Klaus hears Davina's footsteps and pins her to the wall, saying she has a lot of nerve coming there alone. But Kol flips him away, revealing she's not alone. Klaus hugs Kol, Elijah greets him, and he meets Freya for the first time. He asks where Rebekah is, but Klaus says that's a private family matter. Kol is upset Davina can't be a part of the conversation, but Davina says it's fine and he can make it up to her.
Elijah wants Marcel to get his best men on finding any splinter of White Oak, but Marcel says the Strix would be upset at finding anything but their lost members. Elijah tells him to bring in the head of the culprit before the Strix burn the city to the ground.
Vincent is visited by a man who gives him a letter by someone who wants to meet him at Rousseau's, and the man slits his throat, dying in Vincent's arms. Vincent immediately leaves.
Kol helps Klaus to help find Gaspar.
Vincent finds dozens of people at Rousseau's, compelled to sit quietly. Vincent can't kill Gaspar because Gaspar had compelled a few of the people in the bar to kill the others, holding a knife to each of their throats. Not wanting a bloodbath, Vincent asks what Gaspar wants, and he replies there's something missing in the city that the Ancestors would know.
Marcel asks Josh to ask Davina to help them locate the missing Strix. Josh is not too happy that Marcel is still the Strix's leader. Davina does the locator spell, and nonchalantly says they're all dead.
Kol mixes the letters' ashes with Klaus' blood, and Freya chants the spell. The blood divides; there's multiple all over the world, but only one in New Orleans. Klaus gets a text from Camille, who has gone into Rousseau's. She gets knocked out by Gaspar.
Elijah meets up with Marcel, next to a dumpster that is filled with the bodies of the missing Strix, who have wolf bites. Near that dumpster is the place Jackson died. Elijah, upset, tells Marcel to burn the bodies and heads to said location.
He finds Hayley just about to axe a Strix member, but she does so anyway after her initial reaction to Elijah's presence. She shows him the list of all the people who took down her and Jackson, the ones who helped Tristan kill Jackson while she was forced to watch. Elijah tells her the Strix will see it as an act of war and will want her head, and asks Hayley to think of Hope, but Hayley tells him to not use Hope against her. She wants to do right by Jackson.
Camille wakes up, and Vincent faints from trying to get the Ancestors to tell him the location of the last White Oak. Klaus walks in. He daggers Gaspar, and Klaus manages to save thirty people, but three are dead. Camille leaves.
Klaus asks how Gaspar knew of the White Oak, and Gaspar replies he's connected to everyone else who loathes Klaus. The world has evolved and these connections became simpler and instantaneous. So, even if Klaus kills him, everyone from all over the world will come to New Orleans. Klaus swipes Gaspar's head from his body, angry. Meanwhile, Freya and Kol see the blood on the map move quickly towards New Orleans.
Klaus tells Freya he doesn't run. He disappears. Marcel gives the Strix Gaspar's head and tells them he killed a few more Strix members, while we see in flashback that it's Elijah who killed them. Marcel tells the Strix that more are coming for the Originals, to find the last of the White Oak to kill them.
Kol gives Freya a spell to make it appear Klaus is still in New Orleans if any witch tries to locate him. She's impressed, and he tells her there's no witchcraft on the planet that he hasn't studied. He gets back to Davina in the attic of St. Anne's, and there they make out.
Hayley tells Elijah that Jackson loved despite her feelings for him (Elijah), and he died because of her. So, out of respect for Jackson, she lets Elijah go. Elijah, nearly in tears, tells her he tried to let her go too but failed.
The Ancestors show Vincent where the last White Oak remains; he looks for it, and finds it.
Klaus gets into his car with Hayley and Hope in tow, and they leave New Orleans.
Kol wakes up and his blood bag is empty. Out of control, he feeds on a woman in the streets. Finn appears behind him, and they come face-to-face.

Trivia[]
- Antagonist: Gaspar Cortez.
- Freya mentions that several days have passed since Klaus' sireline was broken by Davina in the previous episode.
- Josh and all the other vampires formerly of Klaus' sireline have been partying in Marcel's place.
- Klaus keeps the letters of his victims' loved ones.
- Kol decides to do right by Davina by trying to control his bloodlust by feeding only from blood bags and promises he will try to control. But later feeds on a woman on the street when he finds all his blood bags empty, feeling regret after doing so.
- Cortez forced Vincent to ask the Ancestors to locate the last of the White Oak which they refused to do, but later, after Cami leaves, they show him where to find the last bullet made by Aurora.
- Cortez is the first vampire shown to know another by sight rather than being told when he knew that Cami was a vampire on sight. This could be experience or her reactions to the compelled people of the bar as only another vampire would and not the way a human would.
- Cami believes that Klaus still has feelings for Aurora as the reason he bricked her up instead of killing her as he had other enemies. She also told him she no longer had feelings for him since turning but Vincent knew she had lied to him.
- Cami told Vincent she knows that someday Aurora will get free and come after her saying that if Klaus won't kill her she'll have to do it herself.
- According to Klaus and Cortez, now that Klaus' sireline is severed from him, all of Klaus' enemies in his own sireline will come to kill him and destroy everything he holds dear, all for revenge from the horrors Klaus has committed in 1,000 years against his own sirelings.
- Hayley and Elijah kills all the Strix vampires responsible for Jackson's death whose deaths are blamed on Cortez by Marcel to cover for them. The two members of the Strix knew who Cortez was as they had dealt with him in the past.
- Klaus and Hayley leave New Orleans with Hope to protect her from all of Klaus' enemies from his now former sireline. Freya does a spell given to her to by Kol which will show any witch doing a locater spell to see that Klaus is still in New Orleans.

Behind the Scenes[]
- Caspar Zafer and Nathaniel Buzolic make their 5th appearances (in the season) as Finn and Kol in this episode.
- We actually got to blow up that limo, which caused such a spectacle in Olde Town Conyers, where we film, that the local newspaper published an article about it that day. And, of course, that article was immediately all over The Originals fan blogs. Spoiler alert?
- Matt Cedeño, who played Cortez, and our director Jeff Hunt looked familiar to each other, and they realized partway through filming that they had worked together before. Jeff was the Steadicam operator on The Suburbans, a 1999 Jennifer Love Hewitt movie, that Matt had a part in.
- Things cut from this episode include a murder, a whole lot more sex, werewolves doing kamikaze shots, a very strong implication that Taylor Swift is a vampire (along with a few members of the Senate), and a letter written to Elijah, several centuries ago, by the infamous Katherine Pierce.
Cultural References[]
- The Pied Piper of Hamlin is a fairy tale about a man who had the ability to magically lure the rats out of Hamlin with his pipe. After doing this for the city of Hamlin, and being double-crossed by them when they refuse to pay him, he then uses the pipe to take all the children.
- Josh references this story when asking Marcel why he hasn't gotten the Strix to leave New Orleans.
Quotes[]
- Niklaus (To Elijah and Freya): "My foes will come for me, like never before. Devils of all kinds crawling out of their crevices to strike at me."
- Kol: "She didn't come alone brother."
- Elijah: "No one is safe."
- Niklaus: "It was him. It was Gaspar Cortez. The only son of a particularly vile family of warlords I dealt with in the 17th century."
- Niklaus: "This is exactly I was concerned about. Devils of all kinds crawling out of their crevices to strike at me."
