|“||I love my family, Elena, but they are abominations. I betrayed nature when I created them. It's my duty to kill them.||”|
Esther used the blood of Elena's ancestor, Tatia in order to bind the spell that turned her children into vampires and the hybrid curse that suppressed her son Klaus' werewolf aspect, knowing that Tatia was a member of the Petrova doppelgänger bloodline.
Throughout The Vampire Diaries Series
Esther used Matt to push Vicki over to the human side so that she could kill Elena and stop Klaus from creating more hybrids with her blood. Esther took advantage of the spell Bonnie cast to send Vicki's spirit by breaking open the door between the living world and the Other Side, essentially allowing any ghost with unfinished business to be able to cross it and physically interact with the living world.
Esther invited Elena to the ball they were throwing at the Mikaelson Mansion, and Elena was too curious about Esther's intentions to skip the party. Once there, Esther and Elena met in secret, and allowed Elena to ask her questions about herself and her children, knowing that her sage spell would keep the vampires from eavesdropping on them. When Elena asked what Esther wanted with her, Esther told Elena that she wanted to use her doppelgänger blood, which possessed many mystical qualities, to magically link her children together. She then took a drop of Elena's blood and mixed it with the champagne they were all to drink at the toast, which successfully linked the Originals together and ensured that if one Original died, they all would die.
Esther took Elena from the 20's Decade Dance and brought her to the cemetery, where Alaric was waiting for them. Once there, she informed Elena that she planned on once more tapping into her dark magic and turning Alaric into an Enhanced Original vampire, which would give him the strength and power to kill her children and destroy the vampire species, as Mikael intended. Not wanting that fate for Alaric, Elena refused to give her blood, so Esther used her magic to take the blood by force and put it in a chalice from which she had Alaric drink. Elena argued that by turning Alaric, she would just be creating more evil like her children, but Esther insisted that Alaric would not be like them, because she had been using his deaths wearing the Gilbert ring to coax out his darker aspect, which would make him loathe vampires. She also assured Elena that she simply wanted a world where Elena and her loved ones would never again have to suffer because of the actions of vampires. Esther was killed that night by Alaric, when he came upon her nearly forcing Matt and Jeremy to kill each other. Afterward, Elena learned that Esther had magically linking Elena's life force to Alaric's, which meant that Elena's death would cause Alaric to die as well; this was meant to ensure that Alaric would only have one human lifetime to complete his work, but only resulted in Elena becoming a target of those who sought to kill Alaric and save themselves.
